Hi, first post here so apologies if this has been covered, I did search but couldn't find anything.

I collect my 2012 1 series m-sport on weds, currently have a demonstrator whilst waiting for my car to come in. My question is, when starting the car, it defaults to comfort mode. Is there any way to make 'sport' the default? I change it every time I start the car at the moment.

Many thanks

I don't think you can set this is a start up default on any BMW model. Besides, how much work is it to press the button to change it? I'm not sure about your car but if I could code mine to start in sport (or god forbid sport + which disables a level of traction control) I'd end up flying over the road just backing out the drive.

As far as I know you cannot change the default.

On a side note I do find it amusing how you describe your new 1 series as a "1series M Sport" Years ago before "m - sport" trim it was only a small number of people who would refer to a BMW Sport but always AFTER they had said what engine, I.E always a 535I SPORT, 325i SPORT 318 IS . No one ever said "518I SE spec they'd say a 5 series.

Ok, thanks. Appreciate it isn't a big deal to press the button, just prefer to drive in sport by default.

Apologies, I'd heard about mentioning m-sport trim on pistonheads from a friend! I should've remembered/known better - duly noted.

It is easier than "2012 Estoril Blue 116i M-Sport"...

Anyway, to the OP, is yours an automatic or manual, and with Dynamic Drive or standard suspension? If manual and standard suspension, the "Comfort" setting really only changes throttle response (and steering weight?), which with all due respect may not have such a huge effect on an 116i.

PS: If I could ask for a default setting, it would be to have the "stop/start" off by default, that infuriates me.

Thank you.

It's a manual, as for the suspension, I believe it's standard (no mention of dynamic drive by the salesman).

Appreciate its quite a trivial question and really not a problem at all, just thought it was worth asking in case there was a quick/known solution.

Well, my 2014, non M, diesel 5 series, 530D Luxury not sporty, has Eco pro, comfort +, comfort, sport + and sport but not necessarily in that order! wink

If I switch off in comfort or comfort +, it resumes in what it was switched off in. If I switch off in any other mode it resumes in comfort. I don't know what the difference is between comfort and comfort + but I think a different picture is shown for a while when I change from one to the other.

If I don't go through the correct process concerning seat belts, feet on brakes, gear selection etc the fker makes odd bonging sounds that get on my tits. Too clever for its own good if you ask me.

That is all.

They wouldn't mention dynamic drive as the 1 series doesn't have that option as that system combines active anti roll bars and dampers and was available on the 5/6/7 series now renamed adaptive drive IIRC.

You can get adaptive M suspension on your M sport (dampers only) and that would be part of the configuration when selecting the various modes you describe.

As others have said it's not possible to default via the idrive however, in the US they successfully code the cars to do allsorts so it might be worth searching on bimmerpost as there might be a solution.

Congrats on the new car, enjoy!

That's really helpful, thanks. I'll sign up to bimmer post.

Is there any way of identifying adaptive M suspension?

If you're buying from a BMW dealer they will be able to tell you, other than that the suspension will go firmer/softer as you toggle between sport/comfort (that's a tell tale!) or you could use a VIN decoder website pop you VIN in and it will tell you the factory spec.

You should also be able to configure the various settings, e.g. in sport mode you should be able to select between chassis and drive train settings. (dampers/steering/throttle)

Awesome - thanks again! Apologies, some of these questions are no doubt a little premature as I don't collect the car until weds but useful all the same.

On a slightly different note, is there a way of turning off Stop/Start by default? Yes, it too is just a button press, I know that!! smile
