Hi all

Four months in and the 535d has racked up 13k miles.

I can't quite get comfortable with having the first sumpful in there for 20k miles so called BMW to get a quote for the first service, which (they told me) is engine oil and microfilter.

And the cost is................. £340............yikes

Apparently this is for oil and microfilter. So

1. Does it REALLY need a new microfilter after three months..... and
2. Does this sound right?

I assume I am getting bummed on the price of the oil.

Surely 6.5 litres of oil plus an oil filter plus a microfilter shoud be nowhere near £300?

That's more expensive than the first service on my C63.

I would have expected £200-£250.

£475 for 5 years servicing so I am not sure why they are charging you that much.

Takes me less than 30 minutes to do an oil and filter change on my 530d and that is on my driveway and includes jacking it up. The longest part is waiting for the oil to drain!

Cost of oil £100 (BMW rates so being generous here)
Cost of Micro Filter £30 - 40 (again BMW rates)
Labour - ask them how much labour they are charging for....but £100 p/h...
Maybe they charge you another hour to look everything over, checks etc?

I always use a new micro filter when changing the oil - not sure it is necessary especially after such a short time but I feel bad if I dont! Given it is a first service I would definately do it as the first couple of oil changes can flush out debris.

When I do mine at home and buy the oil and filter myself it costs me about £80

Totally agree but it's a new car and I am on a PCP and don't want them bending me over come the end of it.

Isn't the microfilter the cabin filter?

Can't see why that would need changing at 3 months old, they've just quoted for a first year service.

That's what I thought. Three months old - all it should need is oil and filter surely?

I realise you wont want to do it yourself if it is a new car - just trying to give you an idea of my time & costs vs theirs.

Re the cabin filters there are 2 on a 5 series and they are stupidly expensive (£40 each on mine although cheaper if you buy them as part of a service pack with a fuel filter), carbon filters or something like that. I dont think they are mileage related in terms of changing them, I change mine every 2 - 3 years and have not noticed any difference either way. They are a 5 min job to change. I would definately opt out of that cost if you can

That'll be the difference then!!

Quick question - the service disply says "engine oil" as the next service due in 7000 miles.

I assume if I have that done then the display with then say "Inspection in 19000" or somesuch??

Do BMW still do that, that is Oil/Inspection 1/Oil/Inspection II/OIl etc etc??

that's crazy just because it's a new car

if it's on their 4+ year old car the oil and oil filter service is only about £155 as i've had it done recently

micro filter is the cabin pollen filter
again these are like a 5 minute job but they do like to charge

welcome to BMW dealer prices

I got a quote of £180 to change a seat belt buckle which is one screw!

My local independent just did an oil and filter service on my 535d F10 for £190 incl VAT and lent me a Mercedes C180 for the afternoon whilst they did it. I also had them give the car a good look over underneath to see if there were any obvious problems developing as its new to me (and them).

They washed the car as well before handing it back. Oh, and filled the washer bottle.

Main dealer BMW servicing is an expensive and unpleasant experience in my view.

Why on earth did you not spec the 5 year service pack!?!? Seems a no brainer?

Edited: hehe

I bought a cancelled order. But it appears that he who specced it did me a favour!!

cool

Reminds a bit of the guy who took his car into the main dealer for a service and they quoted him a load of 'urgent' work.

He said sure go ahead, do it all.

When he went to collect the car, they presented him the bill for all this extra work, to which he produced his fully paid up gold plated service and maintenance warranty that covered everything, pow!

Was on here but can't remember who it was.

Now that you've found out you're on the service sceheme, I'd be suprised if BMW did the service now. In my experience the service couldn't be done until it was within 1000 miles of when it was due.

Agree, you're doing work outside the service agreement so would be surprised if you're covered for an additional oil change. Why don't you just take it to an independent for an oil change? It won't affect your warranty. I use main dealer for servicing but when it comes to consumables like pads, discs etc I always go to a trusted indie, they have decent mechanics and charge a fraction.

So? You can buy it at registration, or, for a higher cost, within 60 days.

It might not make sense if you had 2yr low mileage lease, but for all other circumstances, as pointed out above, it's a no-brainer. As you're doing a lot of miles, it'll save you a small fortune.

ETA: Ah! I see the update.

100% correct, they plan covers the service when the car demands it, but not otherwise.

I am on a 30k a year lease, car is only three months old and 13k miles. I'll just run it to 19k then get it done. Car will be replaced within the three years anyway.

That happened to one of the guys on a Mercedes forum I visit - he had the old ServicePlus scheme and got the usual "it needs pads and disks all round" call - the rest of it was just as you describe.

To be fair - I had the opposite from the MB dealer I use. I had the scheme and when I picked the car up after service they said the pads and disks weren't far off, but OK for now. When I said I had ServicePlus, the Service Advisor looked mortified and asked if they could come and collect the car the next day to do the work.

It better had be - if you carry on at the current mileage the excess mileage charge is going to be hefty.
