The time has come to replace my front brake pads - or so the car is telling me. I counted down from 1000 and when the service indicator turned red (100 miles to go) I placed an order with ECP. A day or two later the red brake warning light came on the dash and it now doesn't go off, even after restarting - possibly as a result of the wear indicators having made contact but I can't be sure of that.

I wanted to be rid of the service reminder bonging (and the red light) until I got a chance to do the pads so I followed a reset procedure I found on youtube & other forums;
Ignition on (not engine), hold odometer reset button until yellow triangle appears then goes out, select front brake pads item & press BC to select, hold BC to reset until clock starts ticking & release.
What that has actually done is put the computer into some weird hybrid state where I still get the red service warning when starting & stopping as well as the red light, but the mileage status of the front AND rear brake pads has been set to --------- and Service Required. Previously, the rear pads were on about 35k as they were only changed (and reset) around 6k miles ago.

So, three questions really -
1. Why has this reset procedure done something to the front AND rear pads?
2. What is causing the red warning light on the dash?
3. What is the correct way to reset the service indicators? I'll need to do it when I change the front pads and it seems that I'll also need to reset the rears as well.

The computer has thrown a wobbler because you've reset it but the sensor wire is still telling it its worn.

They're not that clever.

Oh, so I've used the right reset procedure but the pads & sensors need changing before it sorts itself out? I'll hopefully be doing them on Monday evening so I'll report back the result - as well as how much meat is left on the pads.

I did the pads yesterday evening and all is now good - 50k showing on the fronts. Had to do the reset procedure again once I'd changed them but it worked straight away. Didn't see it mentioned anywhere else so worth pointing out for anyone else doing this job that there's only one pad sensor, on the passenger side. I bought two just in case, so will take the spare one back.

On the pad with the sensor there was around 3mm left and the others a bit more around 4-5mm, compared to the 10mm or so on the (Pagid) new ones.

Sensors are on nearside front and offside rear wheels.
