Interesting, I had a manual 330i and then went auto 530i and always thought the 5 series would feel weird in manual guise, and one of the reasons I never bought an M5.
My old man had a manual E34 though which I got to drive and liked that, so don't know why I got that in my head about manual 5 series.
I spent months searching for, and eventually purchased, a manual E39 530i 8 years ago - and enjoyed every minute of it. I've no idea why but a manual box in the E39 just worked so well for me and the auto never really felt as good.My old man had a manual E34 though which I got to drive and liked that, so don't know why I got that in my head about manual 5 series.
I wouldn't have a modern manual, modern autoboxes are just too good, but the E39 530i manual is awesome.

hi, in answer. I had a 2013 x5, went to a 2014 e350, returned it within 3 weeks and now have a a 2014 525 touring. the E350 was a total let down for a number of reasons. I live in somerset and travel along the 303 a lot. anyone who knows this road will know that parts are none tarmac near towards Honiton. well the e350 was just so b---- noisy, road noise was a total joke. the keep you awake system was just a pain this being a vibration from the steering wheel, the car was slow and heavy and returned around 32mpg, OK I did not worry about the mpg its a big car. the google maps needed a mobile phone connection and never did work very well, the whole tech side was old hat. not at once did I feel happy with the car. OK you say why did you buy it. well as you all know a test drive is a short time with a car, I made a mistake and got shot of it ASAP. yes I had a fight with MB but did win in the end. the BMW on the other hand is a delight. good tech with google maps etc, better suspension, lower much lower noise levels. I would of wanted a 530d but there was not one to hand so had a drive in the 525d, ok not so fast but who cares really, its a much better car then the x5 which was like a fast transit and way way ahead then the MB. anyway that's my view.
I chose a 530D for much the same reasons, though when I tested cars I drove an AMG CLS350 and a 530D without adaptive suspension. Both cars had big wheels with low profile tyres and I didn't think there was much in it for road noise. At 70 in either car voices had to be raised, and I didn't think either was acceptable for the class of car.Edited by anonymous-user on Saturday 11th October 21:18
I chose the BMW because I preferred the big satnav screen and the i drive stuff, but I specced my car with adaptive suspension and 18" rims with normal tyres, hoping it would give the ride I was looking for. Much, much better than the 530 I test drove.
Since I got my 530 I have driven an E350 with standard wheels and air suspension and in terms of road noise, it didn't seem much different to my 530.

I've had 7 BMWs and only one Mercedes, an r129 SL320 lovely car, electric leather heated everything but that damn parking brake!
It has no place in a luxury car at all, start engine pull the lever......THUNK! dreadful.
But Mercedes don't think you should use it unless really necessary. It has no place in a luxury car at all, start engine pull the lever......THUNK! dreadful.

Things have moved on a bit over the last couple of decades. It has no place in a luxury car at all, start engine pull the lever......THUNK! dreadful.
In my 14 plate 5 series, I have to switch on auto hold to get the brake on during stop/start. In my 64 plate SLK, all I have to do is apply a bit of extra pressure on the brake as I stop.
What is it with BMW, putting me to all that extra work?

It's not extra work though is it, because once you've hit Auto H once thats it, it'll do it automatically whereas you need to apply a bit of extra pressure every time with the Merc In my 14 plate 5 series, I have to switch on auto hold to get the brake on during stop/start. However my old VW CC had a permanently 'on' button for the auto hold. What the hell is it with BMW and Mercedes?

But when would you ever use it?
I have had Mercs for the last 15 years and can't remember every having to use it.
Put it in Park and that's it.
That's your choice, I always use the handbrake/parking brake the only times I wouldn't is if I'd ragged my 911 or M3 and I'd let the brakes cool down first. I have had Mercs for the last 15 years and can't remember every having to use it.

Mercedes state in the manual it should only be used if parking on extreme hills. Obviously when an auto, not for a manual.
