What age ? Older Z4 or the newer shape ? Normally aspirated or twin turbo?

Not a lot, really solid cars.
Broken rear springs and a flooded roof motor housing are the favourites.

I own a E85 Z4 2.5SE 2005 - pretty solid cars but known issues are broken rear springs very easy fix ,front wishbone rear bushes bit of a pig of a job but my garage charged me £220 to replace.

Had the wishbone bushes done on my '04 E85, 62k miles on the clock. Cost me £140. No other problems so far. It even works quite well with runflats (unlike my E61).
Only real negative for me is the rubbish standard stereo, but that seems to be a common complaint for many BMW owners with the basic factory setup.

I seem to remember on here something about the steering columns on the earlier cars which go and are expensive to replace - as it is the whole unit ?

Personally I wouldn't look at a post 2006 car unless the its has the above issues addressed.

The sticky steering was a nightmare and really put me off driving the car tbh!

Front rear wishbone bushes (lolly pop) need doing around 70-80k

Rear drop links go.

Rear drain holes need to be kept clear, otherwise the roof motor gets submerged in water, listen out for the roof struggling, it should go up/down in around 8/9sec

I also suffered water ingress running down the A pillar.

Mechanically they are bullet proof as it the same m54 lump as the e46 330, there alos pretty quick in a straight line and handle well once the runflats are ditched.

ABS/DTC pump issues are common and expensive.

You can't. If they fail you get three warning lights on the dash. Sometimes cancelling the fault code or disconnecting the battery will keep the lights out for a week or two but they will come back on eventually and there is no real cure but a new pump. (There are firms who will repair pumps but it seems a bit hit and miss, in that some they just can't and some they do but they don't last long)

With a dealer it's a £2250 or so job, but BMW will make a contribution if the car has FSH etc. at least they did with me. Our 25K 2008 car cost £700, after contribution.

I've just had this too, on my 2008 E86 3.0L. Fortunately covered on warranty but was quoted at £2000.

It's a very common issue. We never extended the warranty because the car wasn't doing many miles. I bought a new 5 series early this year so the dealer was on my side, which is maybe why BMW made a big contribution to the £2300 bill.
