Bye bye e39 hello vw tiguan....

Well after almost 4 years the e39 525 sport touring will be leaving its pampered home for pastures greener.... the replacement is a tiguan!
jokes aside its actually the newest car ive ever bought and once the novelty of the new mod cons wears off im sure ill shed a tear or two...
but in all seriousness, the tig is probably better suited to my family's needs than the e39 at present so no regrets yet
the e39 was and is amazing in all respects and id love to be in a m5 at some point
im not leaving the bmw family entirely though... the alpina still has pride of place!

It's a close call. On paper the boot space is almost the same but in the tig you get the space vertically in the bmw it's horizontal. The rear seats of the tig slide forward by about 20cm which gives even more room.
Up front the cockpit is surprisingly good both in terms of ergonomics but also quality of fit and finish. I had a mk4 r32 for a few months and its certainly a step up.
We live in a semi rural area and the bmw has been a bit slippery even with nokians so we will see if the tig is any more sure footed.
In fairness it's not really a like for like change so time will tell if it was the right thing to do. Given that it's my wifes daily driver I think the car suits her needs more than the petrol head in me and I'm happy to make that compromise as long as I have my toy.

I was hoping for a 5 door family car with enough room for my 7.5 stone dog in the boot. 525 was a 4 door which was big enough for us 4 humans but a bit of a push with the dog. Dog had to sit on passenger seat with his harness on and wife had to sit inbetween the two girls. Henry thought it was great but my wife wasnt too happy about that arrangement. Now if we need to take the dog we take two cars, my wife takes the girls in her Polo and I put Henry in the boot on my Z3M Coupe 
edit: this is the first time I have started looking for a new (to me) car where i didnt know what i wanted. Usually I know exactly what i want even down to the spec/trim.

An update for those that are keen
Despite what the stats say the tig boot definitely appears smaller in use.
The e39 would swallow a maclaren buggy and 2 small kids bikes and some other random stuff. It would then leave enough room to pile other stuff onto.
To get the same in the tig ive had to push the rear seats forward as much as possible. The width of the boot is narrower so the buggy takes up more space than it did in the e39.
None of this was material in my decision to purchase but for those folks who need the boot space configured a certain way it might be useful info.
