Yes, 275 rears on the F10 - probably the cause of the additional road roar, but almost a non-existent problem on continental roads. I'll try out an F11 535d for size: road noise is the saloon's only flaw in my view. In the meantime I have ordered a set of Dunlop Sportmaxx GT: hopefully they'll improve matters as the bill is >£1k.

Mark, I'm an avid listener to your Case Notes podcast; it's not only fascinating and compelling but has been an extremely helpful family health resource over the years so I thank you sincerely. I'm mightily impressed and envious of your fleet. Having owned a 993turbo and 928gts in the past it seems I might also be suffering from a Stuttgart-originated syndrome you may want to devote a programme to. smile

Thank you.
I love the F11. Probably the best all round car I have ever owned. 70k miles and climbing. Make sure you try one with Adaptive though.

Adaptive drive is a must although strangely all the dealer sales people I talked to seemed ambivalent about it. I don't think it should be an £2k+ option. I would also highly recommend the comfort seats - worth every penny if one is taller than average. Other options I held out for are head up display and professional nav - I miss them when they're not there. Oh and full xenon lights.

Just checked my F10 this morning
245 front
275 rear

C£1.1k to replace the set when they wear out.

Rears are like rollers !!

You can put 245.40.19 on the rear as well, less tram lining, quieter, and reduces the understeer nicely.

Do BMW support that? I thought it would screw up the DSC settings, no?

Conversely could you put on wider... 295/300 onto the rear? Not sure why you'd want to £ and further under steer

I think the rationale here is that narrower = quieter...

Identical rolling diameter I would have thought, so no. But I am too lazy to calculate.

That is what normal smaller engined F10s run - same size all round.

Why do F10's have wider rears over F11's?

£1.1k wow - that's £500 more than I paid for a set of 18" Michelin Supersports for our 640d (fitted)

It matches the front perfectly, so better for the DSC than the wider rear fitted as standard.

You can buy genuine BMW wheels with that size all round, so approved.

I know I've got the invoice from BMW which they "paid" to replace them as an AUC - sure I'd get them for less but the point is wider tyres on large rims = very high price. Though guess they will last a long time.

Wonder how much a pair of those wheels would cost? I think I would prefer narrower tyres at the back, assuming the 535d torque wouldn't light them up all the time... it doesn't in the touring so I can't see why not.

The 245 section rears (same as the fronts) seem to put the power down ok on our 640d...

Happy to lend you a pair to try when I switch to winters if you live near Glos - they have new Michelins on.
About £1k with tyres and a bit of negotiation but loads on ebay.

I think it is because there isn't room for the bigger tyres/wheels on an estate as the wheel arches are designed to maximise the load area.

The bigger rears also give the saloon a more aggressive stance in theory - if you put smaller section tyres on the back will it compromise looks? As I said above, I have no complaints with the Dunlops and I have the 19" rollers!

The extra width is internal, ie the narrower wheel/ tyres sit flush with the bodywork but don't extend so far in so car look the same at a glance. And you can run saloon spec rears on the F11 too - there is room.

275 rear section tyres on my 7 series running Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2 tyres and they're certainly not noisy. In fact, it's among one of the quietest cars I've been in. Thoroughly recommend those tyres.
