Hi All,

Any words of wisdom? Apparently the panoramic sunroof doesn't open - not that it really bothers me, there is also a nasty towbar.

Thanks in advance

And make sure it rides well, bushes probably shot to bits if it has been on runflats for the last 9 years.

Check for any evidence of moisture in the spare wheel well - leaking sunroof seals and blocked drain channels lead to water getting in around the electrics in the boot.

Mrs G has an 06 plate 110k mile petrol e61 and we've just spent a grand on replacement rear shocks and a transmission service.

These are at an age now where there's inevitably going to be bills to pay. Ours was sub-£4k, so we're happy to throw a bit of money at it because we're still quids in. But spending twice the entry fee doesn't necessarily avoid the bills...

That 535d will not get 34mpg.

Mine used to get between 21 and 34 and an average of 26.9 over 18 months, that was going from 10k miles to 40k miles.

I agree, the 530i is nicer and gets slightly better economy.

530d gets around 6mpg more as does the facelift 535d.

That car is over priced imho, you can be in a facelift one which is much better all round for a smidge more.

Don't get me wrong, nice enough car, but £7500 tops.
In fact £7k tops, no HUD, no pano roof.

Looks like a great car, I love the colour combo. Im sure it will chuck a few bills at you but expensive motoring is never cheap. True, it is not particularly well specced but if you wanted things such as Logic7 and HUD I guess you would not be going to view it. How did you get on?

Thanks for the comments guys, its actually my brother who is looking for the 535d but i'm helping. Went out for a drive and it didn't feel very quick, upon getting it back he noticed a slight knocking noise from the engine. The traders mechanic said there was a problem with a sensor, £100 to fix but couldn't do it for a few days, so my brother walked away.

Increased budget and off to see this one tomorrow...Private seller who on sounds honest on the phone, apparently it needs nothing, just had new discs and pads all round.

followed by this one if the private car isn't any good.

Exactly this. If you really want a 535d get the facelift (LCI in BMW geek speak). Electronic gearbox selector is an easy way to tell.

For £11k I'd want the facelift.

Get a 530i or d.

Problem is, buying into a pre LCI car it now looks like a 10 year old car, and £11k is too much.

It was great at the time, but things have moved on.

LCI at £11k not a pre facelift.

I get that, but coming from someone who owned a 535d and drove a facelift 530d I would say the facelift 530d is the better car.

I would rather a 70k mile 530d in the right colour than a 100k miles 535d in a colour I was not a fan of.

The 530d is nearly as quick, gets a good 20% better economy and is not a poor mans 535d, it is the sensible mans car.
Well, given two identical spec and mileage cars one a 530d and one a 535d I would have the 535d, but I don't think it has to be the 535d if that makes sense?

I agree. I don't think the performance gap is as big as a lot of people think. 535d is obviously faster but a lci 530d at the same price as a pre-lci 535d would be a much better buy imo. The blue one with the hard drive looks lovely. If you can find a nice lci 535d in budget then go for it. Maybe test drive them all before deciding??

Having owned a 231bhp e90 330d and now a 535d F10 313bhp 8 speed - I can confirm that the 535d is a vastly quicker car but delivers similar mpg - I suspect the 530d would be significantly better on the fuel... But you lose the power.

Huh??

You're going the other way round though.

231bhp 330d to f10 535d is not a fair comparison, that is the biggest gap you can get.

Well timed thread, I'd been looking for a 535 or 530. Ended up buying the middle one that gizlaroc linked, decided that I really wanted the goodies that came with LCI and particularly that newer one with bits like USB port and HDD

There's also a 550i in the area which was tempting:
