I've had my 5 series winter Contis in storage ever since I sold the car a year ago. They've hardly been used (about 7-8mm tread) so what would be a fair price to get rid? About 50% of original value?

I'd say more that that. 70% should be achievable.

I would say they are worth that, but actually getting someone to pay it may not be quite so easy.

Just remember 50% of something is better than 70% of nothing.

Try the higher price, but be ready to drop if not sold within a week or so.

Are you selling them with rims or the tyres alone?
Is it for the E60 or F10? Spec & size?

I'm not 100% sure I need winter tyres as I've never needed them previously but for added safety/shorter stopping distance its possible

winter tyres should be valued about 0% at around 4-5mm as it is recommended to change them at that tread deopth to make it worth while using them. Minus also any value of any warranty available to original purchaser and the risk associated with buying second hand, and postage, id say you should be looking for 60-65%

Just the tyres (ContiWinterSports), E60 on 18", not sure I should really say any more as it would probably be a breach of forum rules.

Start high and come down. If there's a cold snap you might have more joy too.

At this time of the year, almost anything goes.

I've just sold my completely shot winters on steels for £100+ because they wanted the rims. I only bought them for around £400.

Daily express/mail has been giving tails of doom so the price is high at the moment - at least half the price when new.

The price of used tyres is far too high these days.

If it is a popular size, you can usually get every penny back for the wear left if you bought the tyres at a good price. Don't know how many times I've seen guys get 70% of their money back with 70% tread depth left.

False economy for the buyers, but all in your favour.

I've just bought 4 OEM MINI 16" wheels that are 99% unmarked with almost new Bridgestone Blizzaks for £340. They were £1100 new last Autumn.

Also have 17" BMW wheels that have the odd scuff here and there and some 10% used Pirelli winters for £530 all in.

I sold my old 17" Audi wheels with 10% worn Nokian WR-A3 tyres for £400.

So there are some good value tyres/wheels out there.

Could it have something to do with more people leasing rather then buying? If you need to replace the tyres before handing it in (or know you won't go through a new set before hand back) it may seem "sensible" to go with part worns.

I sold 17" BMW winters I had used for about 3K miles over 2 winters totally unmarked for £500. They cost me £1600. I thought I would get more than I did but was happy to have the money now rather than wait in the hope for poor weather to increase their value.

Tea Pot One - did you sell them earlier this year to a guy who day-tripped it from Birmingham? If you did, that was me, hello!

That is what the manufacturers recommend - unsurprisingly. Akin to changing summers at 3-4mm. Winters still work well at 4mm, as summers do at 3mm, but their performance in bad conditions starts to tail off significantly. Hardly useless though.

Just bought a set of genuine bmw 18's with Dunlop winter sports for an X3 with 7mm of tread all round and completely mint

Cost £650

New price £2500

Sold my e90 genuine wheels set with 17's for £550

When I look at eBay etc .. I'd say there or there abouts is the going rate for used wheelsets

Tyres on their own .. My guess £50 max each for used in good condition with loads of tread .. Down to 3 or 4 mm .. Not really worth anything
