Like most of us Neil probably lives in a country with a climate whereby this isn't exactly a huge consideration when picking a car.
Its a huge consideration for the OP as he asked this question about 3 inches up.

No difference from what ive heard re driving. just have to have somewhere to store the normal runs (which I havent got sadly) so i take my chances.
But I was marooned outside my friends house one snowy night in my new at the time 120d auto ,while all manner of cars of the cheap old variety just cruised by. Runflats plus auto plus Rear Wheel Drive = snow disaster

Thanks for the relpy. Hopefully by the end of January I will have missed the worst of the weather. Then hopefully I can buy some during the summer when the prices are down in preparation for November 2015.

Does having an automatic make it worse. Could you use an automatic and shift into a higher gear staright away or will it not let u

The way to get out is sand bags or weights in the boot re rear wheel drive get it out of auto put it in second and turn the DTC off (the thing that stabilises everything) but honestly on ice or snow runflats are a complete no no.

The 420i i test drove was only getting 21mpg which was disappointing but I have no idea how that car was being driven.
Why, did you sleep through your test drive? biggrin

You should always reset the OBC when you start a test drive and take it out properly. See if it suits your driving style.

Currently in a 220i and average 35/37 at the moment... Not great! ... However the car is still fantastic fun to drive!

Lol I live in England. So my worry is for I will be without a car for a few weeks a year.

Not a deal breaker but still disappointing.

With winter tyres is it as if you're diving normally or is if still difficult?
I have been driving BMWs for more than 10 years in south west Scotland and I have never used winter tyres and never been stranded. If I lived a bit further inland and saw more snow I would probably fit them, but if you just get a day or two of real snow per year I would not bother.

At the moment my M135i on Michelin Super Sports seems to have much better traction in very cold wet conditions than my old 316i (with a third of the power) had on Pirelli P6000s in the wet 10 years ago.

I totally agree on the SS, they are excellent down to 1/2 deg.
Winter tyres are also an excellent idea as they are free, including alloys. Buy in summer - sell in winter.

Road fund licence is not included usually.
