Jon,

Yes - agreed - a bit strong as a generalisation (but right on target for me).

And I further agree that a 535d will look as boring as (or worse than) the millions of 520D idiot-helmed repmobiles that adorn the motorway network. To me the F10 is fugly anyway (my wife insists that I park it out of sight of all windows at home); I chose it solely on the way it performs (and a heavily discounted 640d was an option too).

Each to their own!

Also beware of used cars that have a number plate beginning in "Y" - they are previously owned by either a BMW employee or a rental company (Sixt, Hertz etc).
Or just registered at pretty much any dealership in Yorkshire for private buyers etc!

A little condescending – for those of us who are not “reps” and actually chose a 520d M-Sport (because it’s a good car!) and paid for it ourselves.
Name a better balanced – exec saloon that is as comfy yet is quick enough or as cheap to run?

My business partner runs a brand new Audi A6 (3k old) and it is not a patch on my 520d (he totally agree's btw).

Your wife must love travelling in such a "horrid" machine as a 535d......?

Thanks chaps, much appreciated and the level of detail on some posts has been great:-).

A few questions for the PH crowd:

It is madness to buy a used 535d with lots of goodies - am I asking for trouble;
What mpg do other 535dusers get;
What does the comfort pack include (does it include electric folding mirrors, I hope
I does);
Are the ventilated seats are good as I've heard mixed reviews.
I bought a 1 year old F11 530d estate loaded to the gills with optional extras and ran it for 3 years - very low mileage and parked on the street all the time. Incredible to me, absolutely nothing went wrong with it throughout my ownership. This summer I changed it for a 1 year old F11 535d estate. Not quite so many extras on this one but my experience has been good and I'd suggest there is no madness involved in buying these vehicles.

MPG from these cars is quite incredible considering the weight of the vehicle and engine size/ power. Although I cover low mileage annually I drove up to Glasgow and back to London last weekend. I didn't check the MPG on the way up but the return leg indicated 45.9 mpg average 63.8 mph. Given the weather on Sunday I reckon having a range of up to 700 miles is fantastic.

Not sure about the various packs nor the ventilated seats.

My current car has the HUD which I thought would be great but I rarely see it unless I have the sat nav on in which instance the opposite pertains - the 'slide projections' of upcoming junctions is extremely helpful. Soft close doors were on the last car and whilst they seem a waste of technology, I really miss them! The rear camera is a great thing to have. Yes it can get grimey in poor weather but a quick wipe with a paper hanky restores vision. The sensors are fine but it's nice to be able to see for yourself! Kicked myself for not noticing my new car doesn't have paddle shifters - unbelievable that it was ordered without this fitted on a sport model and it's something I REALLY miss!! The sunroof is an essential for me - had it on both cars - I just have a thing about letting light in and like to have the tilt bit open unless very cold weather/ travelling on motorways. Last car had adaptive suspension and newer one does not. In truth I do not miss it. Adaptive lights came with both - the xenons are great (presumably LEDs are better again?) but the turning around corners does not convince me - I only realised when I was changing cars that it only works when lights are set to auto - something I hadn't done throughout ownership! Hope some of this helps.

Agree - poster should get a Mondeo or non-descript Vauxhall - far flasher than typically understated German "rep" cars! Now where did I put that 500 LbFt for my business trip ???

On another note BM gave me a 640d GT for a morning. Wow! Really liked it - a good few steps up from my E61 in many respects (particularly a more urgent and better sounding engine) - but I couldn't get a photocopier or medical samples in the back wink
