Also worth checking whether the car has ever had a new windscreen. That is sometimes a cause of water ingress and resultant moisture problems if the windscreen wasn't fitted perfectly.
Because all windscreen replacements leak, right? Sorry for the sarcasm but I have seen screens fitted so badly it's a wonder they haven't fallen out yet there was no water in the car. Not saying they don't leak but why do some people always assume it's the screen before anything else?Door membrane on BM's is very common. Check under the sound deadening, it's rubber backed sponge that can hold loads of water but as the rubber is between the sponge and the carpet it's hard to feel if it's wet. If it is wet either remove or VAX it as dry as poss. The rubber backing means it will probably never dry out on its own.
Surely the point of forums is to share opinions that are interesting or useful to each other or should we all go away and lurk with nothing to read?

Err, I was merely offering a possible source of the problem over and above the others that'd already been raised. I've read of another forum member who'd had the same symptoms of misted up windows and discovered soaking wet carpets throughout his car (admittedly not a Z4 but an M135i). The source of the ingress of water turned out to be the windscreen that he'd had replaced.

Oops touched a nerve there?Surely the point of forums is to share opinions that are interesting or useful to each other or should we all go away and lurk with nothing to read?
I'm not saying they don't leak, what I was saying is they are so often not the cause but some people automatically think Windscreen as soon as water gets in the car. I ran a windscreen business for years we had 3 or 4 leak complaints a month from our previous jobs or main dealers asking us to investigate on their behalf. As a company doing about 5500 jobs a year we used to get 1 or 2 genuine leaks of our own a year. Not bad i like to think.
Usually it would be down to a split bit of seam sealer, a loose grommet, blocked drain holes (sun roof or heater plenum), split membranes (BMW mainly) or, and this was by far the biggest, people getting in their cars with an inch of snow on their boots.

ham fisted glass fitters often tear these sheets/membranes on glass renewal
They do. Non ham fisted ones peel the membrane down from the top and never disturb the lower 1/3rd where the water collects Glassman said:
Might be a silly question, but has the roof been down recently?
Roof hasn't been down for a month or so. I suspect this has been leaking for a while on the basis of how much water there is.I removed the door card and some of the trim so I could get a good view around the door seal. Sprayed it quite rigorously and sadly no sign of leaks!
I also removed the carpet enough in the footwell to check for leaks from the bulkhead/windscreen and can't see anything. It's going to the garage tomorrow to see if they have any luck!
Thanks for all the comments.
It could just be down to you having the inside of the car really warm in a really cold environment. The warmer the air the more moisture it can support, then you park the car up at night and the cabin cools down. The windows are not insulated and are exposed to the cold air outside so all the warm moisture looses it's moisture content to the windows that act as condensers.
The other futile thing is trying to dehumidify the car, they are not sealed and the different levels of humidity inside and outside will even out in no time. Dehumidifying will help remove water that has leaked in and stop the cabin becoming too humid when the car's being used with the heaters on.

Ahhhh, thanks man!Must be the problem.... hopefully. It's on the motor side so lets hope there is no lasting damage to that.
