I see your garage you've not owned either an I4 or I6 diesel so comments must be from relative or friends owners not personal ownership.
Certainly the I4 sounds notably worse than the I6 and cannot be compared to a nice I6 or v8 pertrol. You'd never go outside to start a I4 or I6 or v8 diesel purely for the pleasure of doing so ditto reving it when stationary - whereas say an RS6 you'd do every day which is what I did.
So totally accept the sound but I have to add the I4 is rough whereas the I6 is pretty good for what it is sound wise- you'll never get away from the diesel (or turbine noise) so make the choice.

I own a 320i and have done about 500 to 1000 miles in a 320d. I've been driven around in a 335d, and have driven my parents' 335i. I've driven various other petrol and diese BMWs in test drives and as courtesy cars.
In my view, BMW 4 cyl petrols are tolerable in terms of noise and refinement. A bit diesel-like at idle but otherwise neither good nor bad. By contrast, the 4 cyl diesel is thoroughly unpleasant! The turbo 6 cyl engines on either juice are a lot
more refined but lack character (that's turbos for ya). None of the current BMW line up gets close to the 330i of old for sound and feel.
Unless you don't care about fuel bills or have a thing about local air quality (I tick both of those boxes), the 4 cyl diesels are the better choice if you can't afford a 6 cyl; if you want to pay the premium for a turbo 6 cyl, I can't see much of an argument for the diesels. The 335i is a fair bit nicer to drive and isn't really much worse on fuel.
As for a 335d out handling a Boxster S, I've driven a 335i and a Cayman S on the same roads on the same day and the Porsche is a class above. The 3 series is damn impressive for a saloon or estate, but the difference is still very marked (balance, steering feel, progression, stability under steering, throttle and brake inputs, etc). The Cayman is supposedly a tiny bit better in these respects than the Boxster
, but the petrol BMW should also handle better than the diesel (unless someone has changed the effects of mass on handling and not told us )
All very much my own subjective views.
