Pretty sure I'm bidding on one in auction next week, a 62 plate Xdrive Xline...

Have a couple of questions, from what I can see, its only had 1 service so far and is on 19.5k miles, does that sound right?

Xline in general, is a mid range spec, initially I thought it was entry level, is that right? it seems to have equipment over and above SE, but not sure if for that year leather is standard in xline. -it says something about "cloth-leather Carve upholstery"which I cant quite figure out, is that artificial leather, or something else?

Anything in particular you dislike about it?

Must have options? -I figure leather is a must, cabins looked a little cheap without it I thought.

anything else?

I wouldn't be buying one unless it's a x drive and has xenon headlights and Idrive.

I drive a SE 20d LCI S Drive on a fairly regular basis and rate it highly as an alternative to a saloon car; great driving position and comfortable and practical and different.
What I don't like is the light servotronic steering which whilst great around town can feel vague on the open road.

I thought the X Line (which is above SE) only got full leather at the facelift which means 'your' 62 plate wouldn't.

Xline cam out with the facelift,...Oct. 2011 IIRC and is a decent spec

Leather is standard, as are 18" alloys, rear PDC,

Useful extras are the driver comfort pack (adds front pdc, cruise control) folding mirrors, heated seats

Sat Nav makes the dash look a bit classier

XDrive models did not get servotronic steering at the facelift (cam March 2012 IIRC) , people do complain the steering is heavy without it

I've got an X1 20d X-drive M sport Auto.... Catchy.

Anyway, it's ok, not remarkable in any way. The only thing I really don't like is the refinement. The engine is way noisier than it ought to be. Mine is a 12 plate pre faclift so maybe they improved it.

I only bought one because it met my specific needs. 4x4, a bit of ground clearance but felt as much like a sporty car as possible. If you don't need that exact requirement then there is probably a better alternative.

Mines a 12 plate and not a facelift. Steering is heavy, and doesn't self centre as much as other cars I drive.

Must have been oct 2012 for LCI then and March 13 for Servotronic

The one I'm looking at is december 2012, so it will be cutting it close re facelift. Am I right in thinking facelift ones have indicators in the mirrors whereas pre-don't?

My original option was a mercedes B-class. Spent a long time going back and forth, the B class had a way nicer interior, but I'd only compared it to an older X1 with no leather, and I remembered the X1 sounding like a tractor. Unfortunately I couldn't get a drive in either so it's a stab in the dark. No great loss of it doesn't work out tbh but worth giving it a fair shout.

I have driven several of these as dealer loan cars - pre and post facelift. The prefacelift examples I was very unimpressed with - the quality levels inside were poor, the interior not particularly great. The facelift examples upped the stakes interior quality wise but the X1 is based on the original 2004 model 1 Series and it shows no matter how much tarting up BMW have done. They've tried to add some more modern features - the newer style gearshifter for example - but it can't hide the fact it's an old design, things like the monochrome LCD display for the mileage etc make you feel like you are driving a much older car.

It's fairly unique in that it offers raised clearance and 4wd in a compact package. If you need this then the X1 is probably a good choice but if you don't then I would urge you to look at a conventional 1 Series instead - the current model - because it's simply a better and far more modern car.

Thanks, I'll have to brave it out though, the X1 and the B class were on my list specifically because they're slightly higher. Have to drive the old man around and he struggles with getting into and out of a regular height car these days, bigger 4x4 are too high for him, so it was this, the b class, the tiguan or the Q3. Tiguan was really cheap inside, the Q3 was too expensive still, the B class I was bidding on went WAY higher then expected, so switched over to this instead.

I had an early 2010 model. It was an X-Line.

Based on the E91 not the 1 series, of which I owned 3 of each, so should know.

The X1 feels like a jacked up 3 series touring to drive, but more comfy with the softer suspension, oh and mine came on proper tyres too.

I also had a B class for 3 days when our E350 was in for work, and the X1 is far nicer all round.

The only thing I would say is avoid the manual, it ruins the car and the mpg. The auto is far better geared.

I really liked ours and I tried to find an auto to swap with but couldn't and then my daughter started driving so we swapped it for a Fiesta anyway.

But very underestimated car imho.

I'd echo what gizlaroc says

Seriously underrated car.

I've had mine 3 and a half years and 45k

It replaced an E90 upon which it is based

It rides better than the e90 handles really well and has loads of poke .. Mines an x23d

Think of it as a jacked up 3 series touring with xdrive and you will be bang on

Mine has been faultless apart from a windscreen seal at 6k

It still looks and feels like new .. No rattles or squeaks .. No trim has broken or fallen off .. The leather still looks like new

All in all a superb car

just to update this.

Bought an 18D Xline Xdrive manual.

Whoever mentioned the manual isn't great is absolutely correct, though I specifically wanted it for the mrs so she doesn't forget how to drive one. No sat nav either, and I find the DAB radio utterly impossible to tune, I'm worried I'm going to have to actually read the manual at some point. It just never seems to get a signal, and I can't find any of the london stations.

I do find the ride very firm with the run flats, and since they're getting a bit worn I might change them to see if that makes a difference.

I'm liking the height, I'm liking the interior amount of space and the beige leather lifts the interior.

Its not the most incredible thing in the world, but so far its a solid performer and I'm more then pleased with it.

I'm only halfway through the first tank of diesel so far but thats got me 180 miles in london traffic (the C63 gets that from a full tank if I'm lucky!). The stop start is a bit odd, traffic lights are so short that I'm not particularly convinced it does much good, plus half the time it gives up and just idles. Overall a decent motor.

Thank fcensoredk for that - minging Cashcow alternative rubbish that it is!

Still BMW have dropped the "Ultimate Driving Machine" thing now, presumably to accommodate this sort of stuff!!!

Stop the world, I want to get off!

On the way back from collecting it (brand new) the steering wheel adjuster snapped!! That made me think build quality, but it's been fine since. My father's actually, I wouldn't chose one although, as per earlier post, there's a lot of positives to them.
The negative being the servotronic steering, way too light on the open road.
