Hi All,

Odd one, but stick with me.

We've found a car seat we want, but we're being told it might not be compatible with our car.

The seat is a Maxi Cosi Pearl 2 Way. Its exactly what we want, and one of the few that our son fits in properly. We've been offered the seat at a good price where we bought his 0-12 month seat - read 20% less than anywhere else - but there is a catch as to why I don't just have it right now.

The E46 doesn't appear to be listed on the compatibility check on the Maxi-Cosi site, and they've said they need some sort of official BMW document to show its to correct ISO standard. The seat fits in the car perfectly, but apparently part of some new legislation is, if it isn't on the compatibility checker, they can't sell it. This has obviously introduced some doubt as to if its safe in the car or not, so don't want to risk some random way of getting it in case it really isn't suitable.

I contacted BMW, but they don't seem to have any detail - they said the car didn't come with ISOFIX - and yes it does have the official BMW fitted kit. They're trying to find some detail to get back to us.

Whilst that is ongoing, can anyone find anything that details that the car has ISOFIX, but specifically, and most importantly, to what revision of the standard. Apparently something was ratified with the standard in 2008, but plenty of cars as old as 2001 meet that revision. This is what Maxi Cosi & the shop want details of.

Any help appreciated!

That's a weird one.

We've just recently bought a baby seat and isofix from Mothercare, they checked both our cars on the database and mine - a 2002 52 E46 330i was listed as fine.

I can't for the life of me remember what seat and base we have, the pram and buggy is Britax and so is the seat I pretty sure.

Afraid I can't quite answer your question but the normal famly fix base and pearl fits okay. Only issue is you need to find something soft to go in between the seat and the plastic covers for the isofix in the seat back. Otherwise you can't get a secure fit.

Thanks for the two replies so far.

We've got a Pebble on a Family Fix at the moment, strong secure fit and all is good with the world etc.

I agree its an odd request. Maxi Cosi said this:

"Further to my email, you need to ask BMW if your vehicle has an approved semi-universal isofix system, all vehicles manufactured from 2008 onwards have the standardised isofix regulations. BMW will be aware of this and should be able to give you the information you require about your vehicle."

As I said before, Maxi Cosi have said this isn't a 2008 vehicles and on thing, as cars in 2001 met this standard too....

1) put your chassis no in here:

http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html

This will list if the car was built with Isofix, print spec and show to vendor

2) does your car have Isofix? If so it may have been retrofitted. Show car to vendor.

I has both an 02 plate 330i Touring and a 54 plate 330d touring, neither specified ISOFIX on the build sheet (AKA BMWArchive), but both had it fitted as standard. There are small plastic covers in the small piece of fixed rear seat backrest. I fitted several ISOFIX seats to them, including a Maxi Cosi seat (but not a Pearl 2 way) and they all fitted fine. The combination of the ISOFIX and the poll that rests on the floor meant that the child seat did not touch the car seat base at all.

Hi Guys,

Confusion here smile

The car DOES have ISOFIX, I know it has ISOFIX, its in the seats, as per my friends E46 M3.

The car doesn't show up on BMW Archive or through BMW as having ISOFIX in the build sheet, but as others have mentioned, this doesn't mean it isn't there.

The issue is, knowing to what ISO Standard the ISOFIX is set to. Thats the confusion smile

does it have to be brand new?

If you buy it second hand you wont have any issues with retailers. Just got a maxi-cosi familyfix with pebble seat I a nice colour with all the accessories for less than half the retail price for the back of my 530i, it's only a few months old and is basically as-new, lots of bargains to be had on ebay etc. then when you're done with it, it can be sold on again and someone else has already taken the depreciation hit smile

A) Are you buying from a shop where you could test it in the car?

B) What is their return policy? Claim your car is 2008+ and return if it doesn't fit. (And if an existing isofix seat/base fits I can't see why anything else isofix wouldn't! Hell, the compatibility site said isofix bases and seats would fit in a Honda CRZ. Only if you removed the passenger seat!)

Our familyfix base fits in 04 coupe e46, 05 touring e46 and 10 Toyota Avensis. All in exactly the same way so I don't understand how isofix would have changed.
