Looking for some advice.

Started a 120 mile trip on Saturday after about 10 miles EML comes on and what felt like a miss fire slowed down pulled into a lay by and light disappears. Take off everything fine until 10 miles later same symptoms repeat themselves. Again pull over light disappears and as now running late have to press on pretty hard for 100 miles or so. No issues. Return leg next day and as it is a Sunday and Glencoe pretty empty it is a spirited drive home with no hesitations at all.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Injectors and/or coil packs, would be my first point of investigation.
Injectors might be subject to a BMW "product enhancement" if you haven't had them changed already.

I heard of this , when researching a 335i I was considering; in that case it had a PE on the HPFP: a software upgrade, I think. When I spoke to c/services and then dealership both said PE was classed as different from a recall as the owners of cars weren't formally called in for it (notified), but were offered it when in their cars were in, say, for another reason. The PE was free.

I tend to agree with the other chap, injectors, coils beginning to be problematic is a good guess. Get it sorted, because my E46 behaved like this, an intermittent problem very soon becoming permanent; resolution, new coil pack.

It's BMW speak for "we know our product is faulty, but we won't actually say it" smile
Yes, it should be FOC if your car is listed as being affected.

Just been serviced by BMW in November so would have thought they might have mentioned any upgrades as it has a full main dealer history.

They should tell you, but a friend of mine was only informed of the recall, sorry enhancement, at his last service.
It's worth double checking smile
