Went into my local dealer today to talk money on an X5 4.0d.
He could give me £750 BMW contribution discount (not available on 3.0d) plus an extra £1k - so £1,750 in total. I think the 3.0d is more popular so probably harder to get a discount on.
Finance rates were rubbish - he started at 10.8% and came down to 8.3%.

I did better than that on the discount front but am still convinced that there is more that can be done.
Also, don't fall for the "these are hard to get" angle from the dealer.
I was initially told that it was a c4 month lead time from placing the order and pointed towards a nearly new ex-BMW management car.
When I told the guy that I would probably prefer a new one but didn't want to wait 4 months, magically a build slot and delivery for March appeared.

There is between 8-12% off list on a new X5 through the brokers, advertised all over the net, if your dealer won't match this just order through a broker.

If they won't match the broker prices then just order through a broker, and then get someone like Oracle to do the finance. You will get the same car cheaper, with a more competitive finance rate.
Also, wait until the snow has gone before you order...
+1 - we bought our first X5 in December 2010 - looked at the ad, arranged to come and see it and, in the intervening three days, 50cm of snow fell. When we arrived at the dealer, £2k had magically been stuck on the price, along with a claim that I must have been misremembering the advert. Until I produced the screenshot… …BMW main dealers are as big a bunch of sharks as any other dealer - get any offer in writing and make sure you've specified every possible term and condition, again in writing. Also, wait until the snow has gone before you order...

I got 5.9% on finance and 9% off a heavily spec'd 40d in July.
I'd say that was an excellent deal back in July. worsy said:

I'd say that was an excellent deal back in July. I was in dealers about 3 weeks back and they had a new X5 50D in showroom, cant remember exact spec and option list but this was the opening offer when I indicated I was interested (the part exchange was for for an M135i I was looking to move on after having for just under a year and 10000 miles).
I didn't go further so figures were not haggled over anymore but these were the numbers copied from dealers email, based on finance APR at 5.8 % over 47 months and putting 10K of my M135i trade back value as the deposit and the rest back to me. Discount is approx 8% on showroom price I think.
£67,045 Car
£800 Service pack
£5,386.60 Discount
£24,150 Part Exchange
£14,150 Cash back
£777.87 47 Months
£24,797.26 Balloon payment

I'd say that was an excellent deal back in July. Walked out without putting pen to paper....fancied a new car but my E70 has got plenty of legs in it so not in a hurry until a decent deal is forthcoming.
