The 35d and the 40d is the same engine with twin turbos, 313hp, and used in the 335d, 535d, 640d, 740d, X5 40d.....The x40d the X35d and the X30d.

The 30d is a single turbo 258hp engine and used in the 330d, 530d, 730d, X5 30d....

The X5 and 7 series lend themselves to a more relaxed driving style (although I haven't tried the current model X5), and become rather ungainly when pushed through corners. So perhaps if I was looking at one of those, I may consider the 30d engine. In a smaller car which handles pretty well (I have AC Schnitzer springs) the 35d engine is impressive.
