I recently picked up a new D3 and it came with the standard xenons. I must say, I'm really disappointed with the lights, especially coming from a CLS with LEDs. The brightness and colour of the BMWs lights seems like halogens to me.

Anyway, BMW do a dealer fit upgrade which quotes 'up to 50%' improvement in brightness and I'll probably go for them but I wondered if anyone has already done this and what are they like?

At £410 plus fitting they're not for the faint hearted.....

cheers

I don't know what bulbs they will be using but my bmws always have had oem Osrams. Pick up Osram D1s night breakers which are probably the same bulb and are around £70 each. Fit them yourself in an hour.

These are new to the market, I'm going to order in the next few weeks..

http://www.powerbulbs.com/product/xenon-x-tremevis...

Buy 2 for 20% discount.

They're 4800k which will give a slightly whiter light, apparently new oem bulbs in Mercs and audis are 4800-5000k not the 4300k they have been for the last few years...

The BMW ones are just a joke price wise.

I'd be interested to hear what they say.

I'm pretty certain they'll rubbish anything I've linked to and say theirs are far superior etc. When they are more than likely just the same bulbs.. Or even more likely, not as good as I've linked to.

Don't be worried about fitting either, they're no more complicated than a normal halogen bulb. I'd do it for you if you're local.

Dealer didn't know any more, they haven't sold yet so can't comment on their effectiveness, however they did point out the cost is £410 per bulb......

I think I'll investigate other brands.

Thanks for the kind offer but I'm miles away.

Just wow!

I'd strongly recommend an upgrade whatever you go for.. I've done all my xenons with Osrams. The Philips will go in this car as I fancy an ever so slightly whiter light. I'd not stray from either of those brands though.

Beware buying on eBay too.

That's a joke - I read your OP and thought £220 was a lot for fitting two bulbs laugh but £410 each is crazy.

With nights drawing in again, I'm thinking about getting around to this upgrade again. Just wondered if anyone has now done this with the genuine BMW upgraded bulbs, and if so, how much better are they?

Cheers.

You need 2 of these BV.

It's what BMW want to sell you.

Exactly this..

I remember this thread first time round and my mind is still blown that the BMW bulbs are still a consideration.

Every xenon bulb I've swapped out of a BMW have been Osrams, not a BMW stamp to be seen. These bulbs linked above are the best Osram make, I had some in one of my old 3 series and they were fantastic, worth the money IMO (£75 each)

The BMW bulbs won't be any different, they have Osram make them, just as they may have Mahle make an air filter and Bosch the MAF.

I moved to the Philips 4800k bulbs for my current car, light output just as good as the linked Osrams but a bit of a nicer white.

Interesting to hear how good the upgrade bulbs are. I used to have the Nightbreakers (halogen) in my old car and they were worth the expense. At £75 each I was wondering just how much of an improvement they deliver over std xenon bulbs?

Do you need to get them fitted? Mine has the adaptive lights and I don't want to upset anything.

Buy the bulbs on Ebay and fit yourself.
£410 is ridiculous.

Easy to do, depending on car headlight might have to come out but that's std on any car with any type of light these days.

They come out the same as a regular halogen. Nothing to worry about.

Huge difference, I'd shop about a bit though as some sites have discount codes etc to make them a bit cheaper.

The difference was more pronounced than the halogen upgrades available, but then it wants to be at the price!
