Hmm, your quoted figure for the 335d is slightly worse than I'm getting from my F31 yet your figure for the M135i is 5mpg worse than I was getting from my E92 335i; according to the combined figures an M135i should be better on fuel than a 335i so all seems a bit strange! What sort of mileage are those averages calculated over?

Absolutely agree! My figures are based on 8k miles of actual motoring in a 335d and over 30k miles of actual motoring in a 335i; same driver, same road conditions and therefore as close to controlled conditions as you'll ever get away from a laboratory. The difference in real world fuel consumption is less than 8mpg so feel free to stick those facts in your pipe and smoke them!!JNW1 said:

What milage when you had the 335i? V the 335d - just trying to eliminate running in higher mpg - usually 50k miles from my experience. Welshbeef said:

335i bought second-hand with just under 6k miles on the clock and sold at just under 40k miles; 335d purchased new. I know there's a theory that mpg improves with mileage but the running average on the 335i actually deteriorated slightly over the time I had it (albeit by less than 1mpg); obviously never got beyond 50k miles but there was no evidence of a trend to suggest the fuel consumption was improving as the mileage increased. Can't say I ever really noticed a significant movement in fuel consumption over the 60k miles I had my E46 M3 either; the only thing that was consistent was that it always achieved or bettered its combined figure unless I was doing lots of short runs.....

Much better comparison than mine. I did 70 k in the 530d but the rest only 2-3k. Range Rover SVR was only 6 miles

Diesels have in generally taken 50k at least to run in petrols vasty less. Maybe this is what you have seen?

I've measured fuel consumption the old fashioned way (i.e. not just off the trip computer) for each of my last four BMW's; two have been petrol, two have been diesel and the petrols have both been far closer to their claimed combined figures than the diesels (infact slightly better than the combined figure in the case of the E46 M3). Really not wishing to come across as arrogant (although I probably will!) but to be honest I feel I've got enough information to know what the score is where relative fuel consumption is concerned and, while I don't dispute that diesels are better in absolute terms, I'm 100% convinced that their advantage over the equivalent petrol is rather less than the published figures suggest. I really haven't got an axe to grind one way or the the other (I have after all recently bought a 335d) but the evidence of over 100k miles of real world motoring doesn't lie! Perhaps Welshbeef is right and I need to be doing over 50k miles before I start to see the benefit of a diesel; however, on that basis I'll need to have my 335d for almost 3 years before it starts to deliver the real mpg benefits and by that time I'll probably be thinking about making a change!layercake said:

I'd go for a 535d because the money asked for 550i's is bonkers. 5+ year old cars for almost £30k, no thanks.But obviously money aside the 550i is clearly the superior car. But they are often almost M5 money..
