I'm currently running a BMW 530I sport (n52) in a similar price bracket. Great car for the money with reasonable running cost. As mentioned by others, go for highest spec you can....and ideally msport.
How do you find the performance of the 3.0L engine? Enough go for such a big car?
It's more than sufficient for most things, quite a bit quicker than a 520d, and very smooth. On your daily mileage, petrol all the way. I'm confident residual value will be fine against a diesel, very few petrols around.

Yep would definitely agree power is more than sufficient. Comming from a history of fast hondas then moving onto 6 cylinder petrol 3 series BMWs, I love the revvy nature of the straight 6 petrol engines. In the 530i m sport its more of the same but sooooooo much more comfortable and a nicer place to be in.

It may take you a little while getting used to the power higher up in the rev range as opposed to lower powerband of a diesel car. Best bet would be to test drive one and see how you like it.
