My E92 (2008) has done 96,000 miles and on its last MOT had an advisory that the seal was spotting oil.

As a result I am wanting to know how much people have paid or would expect to pay for a gear box oil change. The garage where I had the MOT suggested it would be £360, that is with the seal and plug etc.

I am just not sure if this is a good price or even if I should have a bash myself?

Seems a little on the high side to me, I believe the cost of doing it on my 645 was about £150-£200, but it may be a totally different deal to the E9X

My local indy specialist did a gearbox oil change on my E36 for around £70 using the proper oil etc

I think it depends on whether it is just the oil that is changed, or if they change the oil pan, seal and filter. I will need the lot changing if there is spotting.

I am guessing it will be more than £70 but £360 seems high to me.

Depends what seal they are talking about you will need about 7 litres of oil at about £14 per liter plus a strainer and pan gasket you wont get all the oil out only about 70% on a drain and refill on either ZF and GM slush boxes, IIRC you will have the 6HP 21 ZF box smile if your doing DIY getting the oil back into the gearbox is a little bit of a rigmarole and there is a set procedure to do so its not an easy job and the car needs to be raised level scratchchin

The oil, filter and mechatronic sleeve is around £180 alone.
Then add about 2-3 hours labour and VAT.
The quote you have is about right.

I think the kit is about £150-£175 for the oil/filter/pan change, so it looks like they are wanting to charge me about 3-4 hours labour at £50 ish an hour.

I have considered a DIY but like you say I would need to get the car level and get the tools in to do the work.

Mine took just over 3 hours.
Once the oil is changed and the new parts fitted some adaptations need to be carried out, which take specialist equipment and knowledge. Too much hassle to DIY on the driveway.
Equally, the garage will make a margin on the oil and parts - they can't be expected to provide them at cost.

Just had exactly the same service done along with the rear diff oil changed on my Mercedes. Total cost was around £180 all in. This was at a place in Nottingham called Oakdene transmissions. I am always very particular whith any of my cars, but must say that the service they offer is second to none.

I paid about £400 for mechatronic sleeve, new sump and gasket with replacement oil. I think the quote is pretty fair to be honest. Oil used in the zf box is expensive.

Get the mechatronic sleeve changed while the sump is off as they are prone to leak and only cost a few pounds.

Proper oil is around £20 a litre...

Genuine ZF kit is just shy of £200, that includes new sump/gasket/filter and 7 litres of proper genuine oil, personally wouldn't use a different brand than other than ZF.

My Indy reckons 1.5 hours to do the job, doing DIY is a bit risky as you need diagnostics as the level has to be set at a certain temperature.

All in all it seems like a fair price in that case and to be honest I didn't fancy the DIY option to be honest wink

Seems reasonable but I'd double check they're using proper parts and not a pattern part (this is likely)

and double check they know how to correctly refill, I have no idea what your garage are like but I'd want to know they've done a few before.

Even if it means taking your own bits in. Which you can source here...

I've had quite a few quotes for this and it's averaging out at about £400

Just going to have to bite the bullet and do it I think... Big chunk of dosh though
