Buying new tyres for my E38 750. Dimensions 235/50-18 up front and 255/45-18 rears. Any tips on good and most importantly quiet brand name tyres. Buing Michelin or Contis damn near will double the value of the car biggrin

Kumho KU39, or Barum Bravuris 2 are significantly better than all 3 above.

Good source of info on all things black round & rubber - tyrereviews.co.uk

I put Kumho KU39's on my E65 recently replacing Pirelli P6000. They're much quieter with no noticable loss of traction / degradation in roadholding. They're a decent brand without having to fork out a small fortune BUT the prices of mine and other tyres vary wildly (by in excess of 100%!) from retailer to retailer so shopping around is a must!

NB. The P6000's were over £200 a corner and the KU39's £135. (275/40/19's)

I tried Viking last summer on the rears for my 328 after looking hard for some trustworthy budgets. They are a Norwegian brand owned by Continental, pretty much Continentals budget brand. I gave them a good test when they were on and they gave me no cause for concern when it came to high speed cornering or other 'spirited' driving. The tyre wear was also the same as the continental sports contact 5 I had on the front.

Also as said above Falken are also a good choice. I've tried FK452 and they were seriously sticky, they are not really budget tyres though, they are very soft tyres targeted at high power jap cars. They are cheaper due to the fast tread wear.

Yup, I had 453's on the back of my 530 sport and they were great. easily as good as the conti sport's that they replaced.

That is exactly the main issue with Falken, VERY poor life in comparison to others.

Thanks guys, have a buddy thats a tyrefitter so I might get a reasonable deal on them. So Kumhos or Falkens it seems is a good tip. Will look into the website posted, going to be interesting to see how much prices differ between the UK and Sweden, you fellas are lucky in that regard, everything is more expensive here car wise, apart from fuel, which seems to be equal.

Remember my dad had Vikings for the winter on his MK1 Golf GTI when I was a kid, they were textile ply back then biggrin

Another option is the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo2. BMW is now partering with Hankook and fitting this model as standard to some of the new 3,4 and 5 series cars. MB is as well. I just fitted a set to my 335i - it's a Y rated tyre with 280 treadwear, so that element doesn't seem too bad, and for me they were significantly cheaper than the likes of Conti or Michelin etc.

£115 for 255/45-18 in Sweden, £30 more a pop then in the UK... Might aswell look at eBay biggrin buy they seem like a good choice tho.

I wouldn't normally have considered Hankook. Not sure why, but I guess I would normally have gone for Falken in that price range. But what I can say is they are incredibly quiet, and reviews for the Hankook seem to be consistently good. If you look at the various European tyre test results listed for this model on tyrereviews.co.uk you'll see it hits the top three or four places in a number of them.

I have had a set of uniroyal rainsport 3 and I think they are excellent. A bit underrated at a pretty good price. Try tyreleader for price comparisons.

They are all graded by fuel consumption now. I was staggered to find some cheap tyres burn 7-8% more fuel. Don't need to do too many miles to make a cheap tyre an expensive tyre!

Worth checking out any road up. biggrin

I used to use Falken FK452's, but found that the grip disappeared when the tyres were half worn, so had to change them when they were down to circa 4mm of thread. I found Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's superb based upon a grip / mileage / Noise: 71dB compromise

Found Pirelli PZero in correct dimensions for 7146 sek, roughly £531 for all four. Got them at a swedish online tyre dealer. Seems like a good deal. E rating on the rears for rolling resistance however, but quiet being as wide as they are.

Or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 for roughly the same money. Less rolling resistance and even quieter.

I run Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2 tyres on my E65.... I've had Falken 453s before and the Goodyears are definitely better in the wet and also seem a bit quieter too.
