Fair enough but just because you have money it doesn't mean you want spend it all the time (although I am buying A CL63 BiTurbo shortly) plus when depart with 50+ of your hard earned savings you want to give the wallet a bit of time to recover, I suppose if you lease then it's easier to chop & change but I prefer to own my cars.
I suspect a high proportion of cars costing £50k+ are acquired using some form of finance with people who purchase outright probably being in the minority. Partly that's because not many people have that sort of free cash to spend on a car but I think there's also an element that many individuals want the use of a car but have no particular desire to own it; typically those people will have something like a car allowance which they're quite happy to use to cover a monthly PCP or lease payment but they have no interest in investing lots of their own capital in the car (and in some respects why would you when in the vast majority of cases all they do is lose money?). You're obviously in a position where you can afford to buy expensive machinery outright and good luck to you; however, for those of us that aren't PCP or personal lease is the alternative way to get into a (relatively) expensive car and I suspect the monthly rates on an Alpina would be far higher than a comparable, mainstream, BMW. As I've said many times, I think Alpinas are great cars but I also think you pay for your pleasure and in my case it's unfortunately a price I can't quite justify paying!

Don't recall seeing monthly lease rates for Alpinas before but it looks like a D3 Touring on a 4-year contract at 15k miles/annum is coming out at almost £850/month including VAT (plus you need to put down an initial deposit of £5k). That's for a car with no extras fitted whereas by way of comparison my reasonably high spec F31 335d is costing £500/month despite a lower deposit; not saying for one second that that makes the 335d a better car (clearly it isn't) but it does illustrate the sort of premium you have to pay to have the Alpina (and in percentage terms it's huge). The high monthly repayments on the Alpina also suggest to me that the leasing company isn't assuming a particularly high residual value to offset the increased purchase cost; they could be wrong of course but on the other hand they might just be right.......

Don't mis understand me if PCP works for you that's fine & I agree a £350 premium to have an Alpina is a big price difference per month yes all cars lose money but I also like to play with my cars so in order to do that I have to buy them (I've changed the Alpina alloys & will lower it further at some point) also putting down a chunk of money on a car isn't easy but I've always sold my cars for good money when it comes to selling time, so i don't have to add to much to the pot.

And don't misunderstand me, if I was in a position where I could afford the extra without impacting on other things I'd think very seriously about an Alpina; there's no doubt they're lovely cars and it would be great to have one sat in the garage!

If you do decide to get one as good as the D3 is (so far it's settled in at 42.1mpg) with it's nice engine note & ride which is very good for a car on 20's, I have a sneaky suspicion that the B3/4 is even better so should the option come up take a look at one of those.

OP test drive an Alpina before you settle for a more mainstream BMW then make your decision you might just decide to find an Alpina

Also as side bar in terms of resale you can buy a 90k 2005 330i Sport or 02 M3 for around 6.5k but that will only get you a 2000 Alpina with the same mileage.

I asked on the Alpina forum.......................................

I was talking to Axel Rimpler ( Alpina production manager) at Geneva yesterday about Alpina only having a 2 year warranty.
He said at the moment there are no plans to increase the warranty to 3 years on any Alpina.
In fact BMW AG only put 2 years warranty on all BMWs, it is only when a BMW is imported into the UK a third year is added and funded by BMW GB.

So that 4 series is wrong..................so on top of everything thats another £1k+ on top isnt it sadly for the 3rd year
