That tourer is nice! I struggle to see the value in the Alpina though.
Think I would rather have 9 of my 540 manuals smile

Last question (for now) Alpina B10 3.3 (or 3.2) would you go manual or switch-tronic? Or would that not really bother you & you would buy on condition/history/milage?

I have always thought the manual suits the 3 series more than the 5, but with the switchtronic its a good compromise.

A B10 V8 is hot on the heels of an E39 M5 performance wise and the B10 V8S even more so; a 540i wouldn't see which way any of the three went.

The Alpina Switch-Tronic is also a mile away from a standard BMW automatic - test drive one and see for yourself rather than feed from the opinions of those who haven't done so. Upgraded gearbox software, uprated gearbox internals and torque convertor lock up in every gear give a very definite driveline feel.

But if you do drive at 10/10ths most of the time, get an M5, it is top-dog when all out for a reason.

These cars are plenty quick that driving 10/10ths on the road is v dangerous/license losing.

This thread has gone a bit preachy!

E24Man is the first person whose opinion you want on this thread. I think we nearly all know what he meant

He said "driving at 10/10th's most of the time", presumably the car is for driving on the road? Doubt many people buy these purely for track cars.

rolleyes etc.
Mine does both, thanks, it's more than capable of both. As above, e24man knows his stuff, to suggest he's advocating dangerous driving is purely post building, as far as I can see, & isn't what the thread is about.

There's a complete, working Switch-Tronic box for sale on eBay from a broken B10. I assume that with the appropriate gearbox ECU it could be retrofitted to a 540i?

Yours enviously. ....
