My 02 540i needs a number of paint items. The front bumper/spoiler badly needs repainting, I've got (currently small) bits of rust coming through on the arches plus a couple of other small patches elsewhere, I've been meaning to have an all over machine polish / detail for some time and to cap it all I've carelessly scraped the side about 3 inches reversing into the garage.

Given all that might I just as well have a complete respray? (except for the bootlid/rear bumper I had done last year).

Keeping the exact same colour (Imola red) what would I expect to pay for a "refresh" (as opposed to a bare metal job). Based in Milton Keynes.

All advice gratefully received

You may well find that the arches have to be cut back and laid up with new material. The rust starts on the inside and by the time you see it on the outside it's a major problem.

The quote I got just to do this for the rear arches on my old E39 was £1,200 cash about 2 years ago.

I would expect to pay around £1200-2000 depending where you are.

That's fair

I was thinking, by the time I've totted up 3 or 4 jobs at three or four hundred pounds each, I'm getting towards a respray anyway

Thanks!

Have a look at Retro Classica in Bow Brickhill. They did a good job on my E39 and were very reasonabley priced.

I enquired around a few places a while ago and it was always £2k+. Decided not to bother in the end.

Fairly large car, for any decent job, especially with rust to fix, £2k+.

It's not worth the money to do it, yet.

My E46 has just gone in for rusty front wings and 1 rusty rear wheel arch and the total bill came to 4.5k as they have to replace everything (including the quarter panel!).

Lucky they are doing it under warranty but just an idea of how extensive what looks like a few rust bubbles is on these cars, totally agree with previous comment about rusting from the inside.

Thanks I will

Can you expand a bit on "very reasonably priced"?

Partial respray & machine polish for £400. Included some body repair (dents etc, not rust). Excellent colour match in BMW Arctic Silver

Hi,

Imola red is a fantastic colour and looks brilliant when clean ! I'd say the £1200-2000 level will be about right for a 'refresh' of the paint and done to a very good quality level. Here's a picture of a good friends highly specced 530i example;

The picture was taken on a mobile phone camera, the next time it's clear and sunny, I want to take pictures of it with a better camera !

Cheers, Dennis!

One of my rear wheel arches has a bit of paint bubbling, been quoted £300 for a permanent fix.
