Comparing F30 330d with E90 335d

We have to admit ,surely...that my mates 18 year old mercedes Derv which he still takes to wales and back to london twice a week and has 360,000 miles on it(same engine) ,will never ever be reached by a Modern BMW Diesel.( or mercedes)
Now why is that? Not a rhetorical question I really havent a clue,
EDITED to say he spends and has spent bugger all on it ,nothing major at all ,crazy really

As with any car its all down to luck and we took a E90 330d from 3k miles to over 150k miles over a six year period and it was a solid as a rock and nothing went wrong with it and to drive it was still lovely when we sold it.However if you have a look on the internet turbo`s blow up left right and centre and the DPF is a pain in the backside too but I think a lot of that is down to the owners who buy a diesel and do around 10 miles a week in them.

You may be right about the DPF but I think a lot of problems are conditioned based services,the oil just doesnt get changed enough,,,I had this out with BMW GB but they were adamant this "new" oil can handle it now they may be right Im no Colin Chapman so what do I know.However someone somewhere told me that the Oil filter is the issue even if this long lasting oil is good enough to do 18/20K between changes

That was the only time we have ever over ran a service but sold it on 157k and it was still running nicely so maybe BMW have a point, its incredible how things change though because when I had my 200sx I had to change the oil in that at 6 months or 6k miles when it was under warranty and that's just mad!
Had some fun the other day with a F30 330d in my E90 330i and I was very impressed with it and he was all over my backside pushing me and I was crying out for more power!! I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise to me because its the same BHP as the 330i but it has nearly 200ft/ibs more torque.
I would have liked to have been in the 640d to see if that would have held him off a little better and it gave me a renewed love for the 330d because I liked our old E90 330d but the newer ones are such a step up in performance in comparison.

I have a e91 LCi 335d which I love coming from a e91 330d maual pre LCi which was far better for fuel consumption. In the 335d i have been up against some more modern BMW's at traffic light starts. The new F31 330d is quicker and the 640d from a standing start and it is a case of who is going to chicken out first when you run out of straight road I am in front on the bend but it's a bit hairy when your doing 80-90 mph. But they are quicker. I am now looking at a remap but I don't think even that will match the new 335d if it does it's quoted figures. I think it is all down to the quicker auto boxes on the auto models. It took me a year to find my e91 335d as they are pretty rare and mine is fully spec'ed so It's my keeper. Like others have said I prefer the feel of the steering on the e90 series.

The new 330d is only 9bhp up (I think) on my old 330d LCI at 254ps vs 245ps. It seems it is the gearbox which makes the most significant difference. Having tried the new 8 speed in an M135i I can confirm it is a superb box and I would take it any day over the 7 speed DCT in my Z4 35iS.

Probably because people keep remapping the arse out of them and then wonder why they eventually go bang. Now why is that? Not a rhetorical question I really havent a clue,

Yours was an iron lump though as opposed to the aluminium in the F30Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
