Pretty much decided I'm going to go for a Dynavin N6 for my E39. Has anybody who has gone for one of these opted for the DAB module as well? Its £140 on top of the already hefty price tag so I'm reluctant but if its well worth it...

Had also considered the digital TV module instead as I'd presumably be able to get digital radio channels on that but it looks like it needs external aerials and that starts to sound a bit messy.

Hi,

Keep in mind, that you'll need to provide a good signal to the dab module and for that you'd need a high quality antenna to be installed as well. I think the supplied ones that perhaps stick in your windscreen will be ok if you are in strong signal areas, but performance most likely will tail off quite quickly once you get to lesser signal strengths. A higher quality antenna placed in the same location will perhaps perform better - will be extra expense of course, however, for Digital Radio reception that's as best as you can achieve, you should get an external antenna and again, of high quality which is additional expense again.

The Dynavin N6 is the 'best' of the cheap chinese replacement head unit's for E39's and other similar era BMW's. However, they do have some niggles and issues and can be prone to more developing over time. The 'support' from the UK importers, leaves quite a bit to be desired too as some recent E46 Dynavin purchasers have returned their unit's due to poor support and fitment of their units/issues & niggles.

I'd say a better route for you, which is what I personally do, is if you have a smartphone and perhaps 1,2+ GB of data included on your tariff, to use the free TuneIn app to get access to thousands of radio stations including the main UK ones and stream using bluetooth to the head unit. No need for any extra expense with modules and antenna's, fitting charges etc.

I use the Parrot Asteroid Smart in my E39 as I like my purchases to be of high quality and reliability from reputable and recognised brands, the streaming works flawlessly whenever I wish to listen to the radio!

Cheers, Dennis!

Thanks Dennis. Plenty of food for thought there. No decision made yet but think I could probably live without DAB for now, particularly as you say because I could always use a phone app.
