I've used one like this on many cars including the e46 and e9x bmw's and they work fine.

the only thing i would say is if you do get a code, google it as the booklet doesnt always give the right diagnosis. On the e46 i checked recently the booklet said cruise control low voltage, yet when i googled it the code related to the thermostat... it was the thermostat

The best option if you have a Windows laptop is to BMCables/BCables USB to OBSII cable, which comes bundled with INPA and DIS BMW specific software. Much more powerful the the two options mentioned above and it is what the factory and dealships use, respectively to diagnose these cars.

I use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009NP5RPQ?psc=... with the Torque Pro app, which is only available for Android phones. That combination worked fine on an 04 Mondeo and an 01 E39, haven't tried it on my E36 yet

Yes, that looks right. I've got a Cable Shack one (http://www.cable-shack.co.uk/index.php), which is basically the same thing and whilst will have a different installer will be the same BMW Tools software (although I now use newer versions that I found on the internet).

Bought one of the BM Cable jobbies. £25 delivered. It comes with a variety of packages inc INPA. I have used it to read a couple of error codes and knock off the EML. So in that way, it has more than paid for itself. One of the apps allows you to re-code your Beemer. But unless you are a)Fluent in German, b)a computer programmer c)Fluent in Double Dutch and d) all of those things.....I'd leave well alone

bought a iCarsoft diag tool to diagnose my faulty VANOS a couple of months ago I think it covers nearly every BMW model out there but could only connect to the DME + airbag modules on my e36 which was enough for me.

http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/ ?

It's nice and simple and although the dongle and app cost close to £100 I think that can be saved quite quickly in main dealer diagnostic costs.

I've got Carly and it's good, but i've also recently started using Bimmercode and it's half the overall cost and i think it's actually better!
