So recently I had to replace my rear tyres (255/35/18) on my 335i.

I opted for Goodyear Eagle F1s over the Conti Sport 5's on there already. No particular reason, they're similarly priced but I read some reviews about the Goodyears and thought why not!?! Turns out to be an awful choice, first spirited drive and tyres feel wobbly, like they are rolling over the sidewall in any higher speed corners. It's very unnerving and gives absolutely zero confidence. It like the rear tyres are made of jelly!

Has anyone had experience with this, is there a way to combat it? Higher pressure? Anyone bought new tyres and decided to get rid of straight away, guess could try to ebay them?

Thanks

Are they the Assemetric 2's ??

If so they're one of the best on the market, check pressures or run with them for a few miles so they can bed in.

How many miles have they done? I would give it a few hundred, sometimes tyres need to run in.
If not I can highly recommend Vredestien Vorti.

Yes, they are asymmetric 2's.

I've done a couple hundred on them so far, grip really isn't the issue because in slower corners and powering out they grip fine. After more googling and searching its seems the Eagle F1s have really soft sidewalls and I'm not the first to find out the hard way:

I fitted some Goodyears Eagle F1's to my e39 M5 and the soft sidewall completly ruined the handling, a mate who has the same car took mine out and was visibly whiter. It felt like the entire rear suspension was falling out.

I'm currently running Vredestiens with a very stiff sidewall and it's perfect.
totally agree with you on this with the F1's - i even put a video of them on youtube and spoke to Goodyear as I couldn't believe the sidewalls could be that soft, but they confirmed the Assymetric 2s do have a soft sidewall

I'm going to try play around with the pressures but I doubt it will help much. Hopefully I'll be able to flog them on ebay!

Give it another 500 miles or so. They will get better.

If you have asymmetrical tyres at the rear and non asymmetric at the front you can have funny handling

Also you fitted non run flats this could account for things.

Check pressures they are supposed to be quite high at rear at around 37psi from memory

Hope this helps

What's the load rating? Are they XL.

They are 94 XL just as the Conti 5's were beforehand.

The previous tyres were also non run flats and I'm pretty sure the Conti's on the front also have a asymmetric tread.

I've upped the pressure a little up to 40 and it's made barely any difference, they still feel like jelly. Just seems to sidewall is too soft looking at these topics too:

I also had Conti Sport 5s on my 335i. Last time round I changed to Michelin PSS (about which I had read great things) unfortunately I've found these to feel a little soft too. When comparing the PSS to the Conti Sport 5s I find no difference in dry grip while wet grip is better with the Contis.

Next time I'll be going back to Contis.

This is interesting.

I was looking at getting the assym 2s as my next set of tyres for the 335i

Might look into Conti 5s instead.

I have Goodyear Eagle F1's on my 335i and I have nothing but praise for them! Very good traction in the wet and dry and don't wear as quickly as I was expecting given the softer compound.
