Absoloutly agree but sadly most of us do not live in a car ad where we are the only ones on the road and no speed cameras ,thats my point so if it was 1970 give me a V8... 2015 commuting from london out on the M4 ,M3, M40 to appts every day give me 50mpg in a big BMW Derv and for 8/10ths what difference?
Well at least you're commuting in the right direction smile

I'm going to find myself doing 1,000 miles a week before long, with a change of work, so I will have to address my own strategy. I don't mind putting 50k/annum on my M5 but I'm worried it might send the wrong message to the client hehe

(said in jest - I couldn't stomach the fuel bill so will have to look at some sort of derv slag to absorb the bulk of the mileage).

Why would a 330d owner see fit to post on a 550i thread? Are you Welshbeef under a different login?

The problem is that the derv is a derv and therefore is simply not as nice to drive as the big V8 (Or even a petrol six). The technical competency of my 530d continues to impress me, it's fast, it's frugal, it's refined, but it's still a diesel and it can't hide the NHV characteristics of a diesel especially around town where the petrol alternative makes no appreciably noise whatsoever and you waft along in serene silence.

The 550i is therefore absolutely wonderful and is so much more than it's paper specification.

Diesal schmeisel, terrible ,I mean my F30 330d Gloucester to West London bascially the A417/9 dual carriage race track followed by M4 to Chiswick 115 miles in a hour and 35 mins.....showing 50 mpg...... fast as you ever need in Sport mode ,dont get the enthusiasm for Petrol anymore.Great car though OP wish you luck with it.
I can see where you came in - to talk about your 330d. Winding us up? Being an irrelevance, I think. Keep frothing.

FWIW, my 535i turns over at about 2000rpm at 90, and can easily turn in high-30s mpg at an average of 72mph down a dual carriageway/motorway like the A417 and M4.

I've never understood this often incessant need diesel owners have to justify the diesel choice, it happens all over the internet including this very thread where somebody is clearly chuffed with a 550i and somebody else is desperate to convince themselves a 330d is kinda almost as good. Way to miss the point.

I am a really big fan of models that hardly anyone is interested in buying nowadays so the 550i really fits the bill for me because most go diesel, I have never seen a current 550i or 650i out on the road and if I was the owner of those cars I would revel in the rareness of them.

Great choice OP.

Apologies if you took that the wrong way, I was just trying to say that 90mph isn't my normal motorway speed so I couldn't comment.

Well done for not getting caught though! I doubt I'd be so lucky.. :-)

Thank you for your comments guys.

I wanted to like the F30, but I test drove a 335i and it was quite noisy and unrefined, even with VDC (car had 19s). It was a no-go for me due to the tyre roar.

I then drove an F10 530d with springs, also on 19s. The car was so much quieter and comfortable that I knew a couple of hundred yards into the test drive that the F10 was for me (but also that the diesel probably wasn't, I just didn't like the thrum of the engine although was willing to put up with it for a car with a good spec). My criteria was comfort seats, pro loudspeaker and pro navigation and anything else like a sunroof would be nice to have.

I very nearly bought a 63 plate 535d in Moonstone but this 550i appeared on the AUC website and with such low mileage, and in my favourite F10 colour and wheels, I was immediately taken by it. In addition to my must-have items the car is fitted with park assist and surround view which is really useful and a sunroof which we have benefitted from in the nice weather. It has a couple of other options too.

I recently got an 18 month contract working 16 miles from home, so due to a combination of the commute and the fact I claim all my mileage, the 550i is a non-issue for me. The 6 cylinder diesel will barely warm up in that distance and be giving 20s/30s until it does. I know from running a E500 5.5 returning 25MPG over a similar commute that it equates to a tank per week for me including weekend jaunts to the seaside. I think the tank on the 550i might be a little smaller, not sure.

I could really have done with the F11 but the dogs rarely go in the car and on the occasions that they do will just sit in the footwells (my children are very small and are in seats so feet don't interfere).

Great car OP. Just picked up my 650i m sport and love it. WRT diesels, they have their place in trucks and utility vehicles IMHO, yes they can go quite quick but you always have the tractor sound!

Thanks. Do you recall a black debadged W211 E Class on the A31 a couple of months ago, travelling west? I had a little dabble with a black VXR8 like yours, I think it had a smallish numberplate?

Anyway how is the 650i? Is it a new one? Do you find it is almost silent?

Absolutely amazing car and mid 20s mpg is what I used to get from my 328i and what I get now for my 335i.

Get those rear backboxes deleted and unleash the noise!

I feel sorry for him that he can't afford to waft about in a 5 litre V8, done 40k in mine these last 2 years, lovely jubbly. Instead he has to put up with listening to diesel clatter and a 4.5k rpm rev limit very day. And every day a little bit of him dies as he knows that you're only on this planet once.

No I think I understand Smashy, the performance/mpg combo of a 6 pot diesel is compelling as you say but a petrol 6 or 8 pot offers more than on paper stats can demonstrate.

Anyway let's not drag the OP's thread off down that line, OP interior pictures please!
