Morning chaps,

My beloved E46 2.2 is terminally ill (rust). It's gotten into the sill and as much as I love the car, it's not worth chucking money into.

I hope to get hold of a another car at some point, and would appreciate any experiences/thoughts on the 335i.

Main thing that concerns me is reliability. I would be surprised if it's as dependable as my E46 which has given me 0 issues.

Cheers!
You can't beat a 0, can you wink

My E92 coupe 335i is closing in on 70k and has avoided all the major issues talked about, with only something called an oxygen sensor replaced under warranty; I still wouldn't run it without BMW warranty because it's a complicated beast and it could so easily go pear shaped. I touch wood at this point.

I came from a E46 (325) also terminally ill, so feel your sadness to speak.

I don't like the E90 generation overall, still in general prefer E46: but 335i is a worthy successor because the performance is immense and even on the RFTs (which are going very soon) it handles that high speed better than E46. However, there is a dilution of the connection you feel with the road with E46, although for involvement the E90 is still better, in my opinion, than the next generation.

It's actually so far costing me less than my average cost of petrol p/mile over 3 years E46 ownership, plus I don't need to top up with oil bi weekly, so it's a good move.

Did I say the performance was immense? biggrin

I'll leave a previous thread here. I was unlucky with my car but lucky I had the warranty.

The only thing that has failed since last January was a coil pack and it had a suspension bush changed last week, picked up on the MOT

Whenever I see one of these coupes I look at the Tyres and it looks like a Rubberband has been put round the rim......what is the ride like ? I imagine its like a steamroller?

I have a 09 335i Saloon which I have run since August last year.

Fantastic brilliant and can get 30mpg ( but not when I driving )mine has RFT s which can make the ride a bit harsh but not that bad. I cant think of any car for the price that would put a bigger smile on my face.

It was horrendous and one of the major reasons why mine lasted 3 months before I got rid of it.

On RFTs it's awful. On non RFTs it's absolutely fine.

The 335i is a great all rounder. I wouldn't say it excels in any one area, other than that it does all things well! It isn't as focused as an M car, but then it isn't as expensive to repair or run either. All told, it has more than enough power for most people and will get you from A to B in comfort, while being able to entertain you along the way should you feel the need. I have owned my E90 M sport manual for around two years now, and while it has caused a few headaches, I still cannot really think of a car I'd rather own for the same money.

There are no guarantees the car you buy will exhibit any of these issues, but the 'known' faults are: high pressure fuel pump, injectors (N54), rattling wastegates (N54), propensity to go through coils and spark plugs (same could be said of other cars), electric water pump (fairly pricey repair) and sometimes the DSC/ABS module (there is now a fairly inexpensive rebuild kit available).

Overall they are a great car though, and I find mine to be pretty economical for what it is. People say that they're really just a 3 series with powerful engine, and while that may be true, I still look forward to driving mine and think of it as a bit of an event, especially when there are country roads involved. The effortless power in any gear, silky smooth engine and exhaust note are pretty addictive!

I owned one for 4 years and did 30k miles in that time (40k to 70k on the clock). It was a 2006 E92 manual.

I had two problems with it in that time - low pressure fuel sensor failed (£280 to fix at an independent) and the water pump failed (£1,100 from a stealer). FYI it's relatively well accepted that all 335is will suffer a water pump failure at around 60k miles. I didn't have a warranty so sometimes felt like I was playing with fire but having costed the warranty across my ownership I spent less on repairs than I would have on the warranty.

Things to look out for: (1) engine cranking for more than a second or two before firing (HPFP failing); (2) an owner that thrashes the car before there's some temp in the oil (turbos likely to fail); (3) any misfires under light acceleration (problem with a coil pack or fuel system); (4) blue smoke on start up (turbos failing); (5) oil temperature not staying rock solid around 110/115 during normal driving (higher than normal temps were the only sign that my water pump was about to expire); rattles from the engine bay on start-up (turbo wastegates rattling).

Great cars - some of them have issues but mine was great apart from the blips mentioned above. I'd have another in a flash if I could.

I've had mine (albeit in Touring guise) for 4 years now, and only had two issues (both last year) - the washer fluid pump getting blocked, and vanos solenoids needing replacing. Both done under warranty, although I've now reduced my excess to £100 from £250.

The turbos do mean it's a bit of a brute, so won't impress anyone that likes working the gears to get power. However it has an enormous amount of power on tap, and with the Alpina flash on the gearbox can be subdued and torquey in normal mode as it changes up at 2K rpm or fantastic and noisy in sport mode where it can hold gear until red line.

I've previously always changed car every 2 years - the only reason I'd change mine now is because for me the pre-LCI styling is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Run-flats do spoil the ride, but I've kept mine on the RFs so far - when the current set wear out I'll swap them for reinforced instead.

I've just recently bought an E90 335i and all I can say is it's fantastic.
It's lovely and comfy and well specc'd.

The rfts do make the ride a little crashy but after a lowered previous car it's something I'm used to.

The power is amazing, just has so much on tap throughout the rev range. The way it gains speed is scary sometimes.

As for issues. Mine has had 2 HPFPs and now has that elusive wastegate rattle. It hasn't created any issues yet apart from the noise.
The other problem I've got is leaking headlight washers and the reverse lights don't always work.

For me getting BMW warranty is a necessary item, especially for £30-40 a month.
