I'm in the process of selling my 330ci convertible and planning to buy another BMW, however I pretty much have no idea what to go for.

I'm trying to avoid going for a car with a high millage or anything made before 2007-08 however with my criteria, there isn't much choice left. I've had a look at E92's and Z4 coupes but nothing excites me that much.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

This is pretty much a useless question I'm afraid. No one but yourself knows what you want and need in a car.

I suggest you take some time to evaluate what you need and want in a car and then look to sites like autotrader, pistonheads etc, to look for cars that are up for sale that you think suit whatever criteria you come up with. Whilst doing that, you could look at cars you see on the road and see if you think any of them are ones you think you might want and then look to see if any are for sale. You can also then visit any dealers who have a car you think might suit and go for test drives to see if you like them. You can also evaluate to see if you can afford to run a car you think you might like.

Do you think that would be possible? if so, go ahead and do all of the above. If not, I suggest you re-read the above!

Cheers, Dennis!

@ that budget I'd stick with the E46 generation. BUT if going newer I can't think what else there is besides the two suggestions which have not excited you. If you change your mind, I have seen some 335i's on A/trader around 70k miles within your budget. That's potentially a great car, and best non M car I can think of for your budget.

You should be able to get a decent 335i or 335d E92 for that sort of money. You have to be a little choosy, but I picked up a cracking E92 335d with all of the mechanical work required (swirl flap removal, red boost hose, gearbox oil change and reset, heating coils and control unit etc) and lower than average mileage for under your budget.

E9x prices seem to be softening at the moment so I think there will be more and more in your budget.

Buy yourself an E21/E30. You've got enough budget to land yourself a really nice example and you'll also be able to get classic insurance. There's also no depreciation to worry about. (Quite the opposite)

If you want something larger, how about an E34 touring? Or an e28 525e?

What's wrong with your current car? The answer to this might help guide your choice - unless you've fallen into the "newer is better" trap...

Current car has done 136k and it didn't have a very loving previous owner plus I was kinda rushed into buying it, although I have spend decent money and fixed it up but to make it perfect and bring it to my standards I would need to spend more and there's no point in doing that in a 11 year old car with 136k on the clock, also it's a automatic so not much fun, mostly straight line speed.

If I had to decide it would be between the 130 or 335.

The V8 6 series has been very tempting but the running costs would cripple me.

Which running costs specifically?

Tax, petrol, servicing, tyres and god forbid if it breaks down I'm screwed.

Plus the Insurance would kill me. Currently paying £650 on the 330, the man maths just doesn't add up frown

You'd be a lot better off with a V8 6 series than a 335i..!

The 335i would cost an awful lot more to fix.

What is the budget per year on running the car then? That would help people make informed decisions.

Why are you buying an 8-9k BMW, with what sounds like, no slush fund?

I picked up a BMW E39 540 for only £2000 and it is FSH and is mint. I realize there are many things that could cost me 1-2k to fix but I bought parts and labor warranty via RAC and so far so good. It's much more enjoyable if you can accept there might be a cost incurred rather than worrying all the time.

Sorry to go on the financial advise but really, that's what you have indicated it boils down to.
