Hi,

Thought I'd post again as you lads have been pretty helpful so far! smile

So I'm weighing up my options here and just wondering what or if I should be concerned about regarding a slightly higher milege 335? I'm eyeing a 74k model that's got mostly a BMW service history but are there any estimated, "this will need changing at x miles" type scenarios? Should I be worried about buying a car with high ish mileage? I could always buy a lower mileage one for increased cost so there's that option.

Second question regarding remaps. Someone mentioned a JB4, but is this a wise idea vs getting some sort of rolling road tune? Is it likely to cause me problems in the future?

Thanks! smile

You can access the I drive and see how long (or miles left) until brake pads need replacing, service required and brake fluid change. You can call BMW with VIN and find out where it's been in the dealer network and then call dealers to get what specific work was done on car. There are some known faults, and some people prefer these to have already failed and been replaced. I took a different view and picked a car with no faults. Got at 59k, now 68k and fine. I do have a warranty with BMW though. You may wish to consider this.

Yeah I had considered getting a BMW warranty. How many notes did that set you back? Is there any prereqs required?

Regarding known faults, what are they? smile

Came free, as mine was an Approved Used Car. Price I believe is higher over 60k which could be another factor in considering lower mileage cars. The issues I had heard of are High pressure fuel pump, water pump, and the turbos. All of which would be coveted under a BMW warranty, so in my opinion well worth it.

Warranty is based on mileage on the car. Mines on 55k and its £40 A month.

Faults are hpfp, water pump and thermostat, turbo wastegates etc.

I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage as long as the history is good. There are people in the U.S. who have over 150k on theirs and a guy in Surrey has over 200k

The JB4 is great because it has switchable maps and can be used to lock the OBD port if wanted. It can also read and delete fault codes etc

I'm guessing remaps would void a BMW warranty?

you'd be in breach, so it's a gamble on whether they find out and then disallow a claim, probably less likely if claim is for a part not relevant to what you've modified.

there's plenty of power in 335i, so if you want more consider other mods to improve handling capabilities otherwise you may not get the real world value of the increase.

Bought my early 2007 E92 in Dec 2010 with 42K miles; its now just passed 79K and has been superb. Original 19 inch Bridgestone RTFs were shockingly bad and were replaced after a couple of weeks with Falken 452s and now I use Goodyear Eagles.
An Evolve map has been on the car since late summer 2011; so much quicker than standard everywhere in the power band and pulls hard to over 6K revs rather than 5.5K when standard. Approx 1.0 fuel consumption penalty. I use a set of 17 inch BMW wheels with Dunlop Winter sport tyres for the colder months; no traction control intervention with winter tyres even with the extra power from the map.

Issues have been few and were standard E90 series faults rather than 335i specific. Brake hydro unit is expensive ( 2200 pounds ish ) to sort via BMW stealer or BMW indie so I used http://www.ecutesting.com/bmw_abs_pump_module_faul... . Great service, lifetime warranty but car is off the road for a few days. 250 pounds + removal and refitting labour. I've also used them to fix the gearbox mechatronic unit on my wife's TT 3.2 DSG. Good company.
Electric water pump went at around 68K.

Probably the kiss of death writing this but HPFP, turbos, injectors, wastegates are all in good health.

I have a 2007 335i E92 N54 manual with 163k on it (all motorway miles). Purchased new. So far it has had all the known problems (turbos replaced at 50k, injectors replaced at 72k, HPFP replaced at 102k,water pump replaced at 158k and it has just thrown a second HPFP warning (engine reduced power) at 163k (last week). The only thing yet to pop are the coil packs. It's been main dealer serviced exclusively until now but I had a local indy take a look at the recent incidence and he confirmed the pump error code.
I like the car a lot but it is prone to engine ancillary problems. Sounds like the N55 might be less problematic but no personal experience.
The basic guts of the engine seem sound. It uses virtually no oil (always change it at 12k or less irrespective of the service info.) and goes like stink. Run on VPower all its life.
