E60 550i Touring - Bork factor?
Discussion
So I was initially in the market for a cheapish dog carrier & was perusing E90 325's when curiosity got the better of me and I came across the 550i
Just wondering what the potential for serious damage here is, especially as i'm at the bottom end of the market (£7k-£10k) so likely to be the odd dog or two about. Anything to look out for in particular?

Hornetrider is your man on these.
Phil's just bought one too, albeit the inferior auto

No more Bork factor than any other E61.. Safer place to put your money than a diesel!
This.Just buy one, the engine is the most reliable bit. Everything else is standard 5 series stuff obvs.

Gentlemans choice! 6 months in now without any thought of moving it on, that's a minor miracle for me. That speaks volumes about these cars, they don't half get under your skin..
It was treated to a wheel refurb 2 weeks ago, and it's in with my local detailer today!

I'm two and a half years in mate, from being a serial 12 month swapper. I reckon it occupies a sweet spot all of it's own (caveat mine is a manual). If you expand it out to autos there's still only one alternative... E500?Think they do a 4.2 A6, also very rare, but I don't really like Audi's.
I considered an E500, it would have to be the newer 5.5 though as I don't think 300hp would be enough in something this size. They're as rare as 550's though.
Ultimately, I prefer BMW and personally think the E60's are best looking.
Edit... This is actually quite nice!

That is twice as much as I paid for my e61 550i more than 2 years ago, is almost twice as expensive to tax, has the same fuel consumption and is slower. Plus I also like rwd v 4wd. So I am out!http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

I remember before I bought mine someone commented that I would soon get bored of the "novelty" of the lazy v8 engine especially once the fuel bills started to rack up and scurry back to a 530d - well, no. There is something about the way that n/a 4.8 wafts around at 2000rpm that really never gets tiresome. And for that reason, I doubt I will be selling any time soon.
Mine by the way is currently on 137000 miles and runs beautifully.
Cheers for the help so far guys. The 55 plate linked above by jshond is probably the only viable one at the moment so may go and view it. £290 tax & £350 insurance looks decent.
Having run an rx8 for 3 years (albeit a while ago) mpg doesn't really bother me, anything over 20 would be fine.

Don't rule out the 545i. OK, it's 5 less, and in the world of Spinal Tap that matters. Sadly auto-only, a few issues but if they've been fixed (i.e. gearbox oil changed, coolant pipe sorted) there's no reason not to.
ETA: Full disclosure - I've got one, and it cost me £6k plus £300 for a new water pump that I knew about before buying...

Couldn't agree more... And why I went for 550i, that Audi is nice in the fact it's not a 2.0 tdi.!I remember before I bought mine someone commented that I would soon get bored of the "novelty" of the lazy v8 engine especially once the fuel bills started to rack up and scurry back to a 530d - well, no. Let us know how you get on.. Be aware it's got no xenons, which IMO is poor and would be a deal breaker for me on a 550i. Although it may not bother you!Having run an rx8 for 3 years (albeit a while ago) mpg doesn't really bother me, anything over 20 would be fine.
Fortunate that it's in the kind tax group, it does hurt paying £505 a year!
