I had only seen those figures for the 330d PPK and thought they fitted with the tendency for rolling roads to overstate. Have you seen others for the 330d PPK?

It will be interesting to see the multiple test results, particularly if as many differences as possible are eliminated:

Same driving mode
Same tyre pressures
Same fuel rating
AC Off...

So that the errors come out 'in the wash' and at least you get good relative figures. There isn't a very good way of removing relative errors between sDrive and xDrive, so the 330d xD comparison with the 335xD is the best way of comparing those engines.

It was OK, not enough swearing or name calling for me.

Except you won't get 50 mpg in a 335d more like low 30;s
With a mixture of driving I get 37.8mpgs from my 335d x drive, would have to be really pressing hard to get low 30's.
Having done just over 11k miles my F31 335d is averaging 38mpg; the worst figure on a tank has been 34.4 (due to a combination of cold weather and short runs in winter) but on a long run on a motorway it will do low 40's (and I daresay it would do better if I stuck to 70 rather than cruising in the 80's!). To get low 30's on a regular basis you'd have to be driving like you stole it in which case you probably you wouldn't keep your licence very long as one thing it isn't is slow (infact even after several months of ownership the effortless way it pulls clear of the following traffic after you've been baulked in the outside lane of a motorway still makes me smile). The 35d is the most refined diesel I've driven by some way (and yes I have driven a couple of F3x 330d's!) so for me the OP has made the right choice; a 30d with performance pack may offer similar power and torque but I doubt it would add anything to resale value and hence on a lease car you'd end-up funding the cost of the upgrade across the term of the agreement (which basically takes it to the same monthly cost as the 35d so not much point unless you want to avoid going X-Drive).

The only thing I'd say on the diesel/petrol debate (rant?) is that although the 35d is very refined at a steady cruise on a motorway you can certainly tell it's a diesel over the first couple of thousand revs; therefore, if you do a fair bit of stop/start driving you're under no illusions what's under the bonnet - it's excellent for a diesel but still not at the level of a good petrol.

if I want noise I put the cassette player next to me with my scalextric recording I made when I was 10....and I never get that "what a w...r" look from the pavement as I pull away in my Derv

Seriously I havent driven the Twin Turbo but my 3ltr if your in heavy traffic at 70mph on the motorway and stick it in Eco the OBC creeps up into the 50s and thats what I would miss in a petrol, more than any noise. But I do a lot of miles

Only used Eco Pro on the odd occasion to see what it was like and for me the dulled response wasn't worth what appeared to be a minuscule fuel saving. Like I say, I'm sure i could get more out of my car if I stuck to the speed limits but frankly I might as well have bought a 318d if I was going to do that; IMO there's not much point getting a 335d if you're going to drive like a granny (which in my experience is the only way you'll see anything approaching the claimed mpg figures).

In terms of the noise, I never said I got looks from the pavement when I pull away and to be honest I couldn't give a monkeys what pedestrians may or may not think; all I was trying to convey was that people who say "you can't tell it's a diesel" are either knowingly talking nonsense or else need their ears testing. That doesn't make the diesels bad cars (far from it) but those who claim they represent some sort of automotive perfection are just as deluded as those that think oil burners are one step removed from a tractor - as is often the case, the truth lies somewhere between the two extremes!

Company car goes back on 19th June.

I've made an offer on an E36 compact as a stop gap. Urgh.

I just want something fairly local for under about £500 to use for 2 months then give it to someone...

£100 a week (ish) to hire something like a Focus so that'd be circa £800 gone for nothing.

Any ideas welcomed!

I just ordered a 335d xdrive on a lease

After a test drive in 2 cars, I decided that Adaptive suspension and variable sports steering were must haves, and prof media and 19" wheels were unnecessary but specced anyway... Ride on 19s without adaptive is pretty poor even compared to my last 2 AMGs

Like AB, I also sold my E63 and bought a <£1000 rot free MX5 mk1 as a stop gap while I await delivery. Now I learned that mini superchargers can be fitted to the MX5 and give reliable 200hp @ wheels. "Stop gap" might become a project...must resist..

I agree that X-Drives are too soft without adaptive if you want to press-on over a twisty road and the ride also gets a touch floaty at higher speeds even on A-roads and not so smooth motorways. However, the flip side of that is I think the low speed ride around town on poor quality roads is actually quite good; not driven any AMG's recently for comparison but don't things like the C63 have a reputation for being a bit hard and crashy (especially on 19" wheels)? If so surprised an X-Drive BMW compares badly in that department although having said that just spotted your old Merc was an E63 so that would no doubt be better than a C63 in terms of ride quality!

Before the order locks in, have you thought about adding M Sport Plus Package to it. A white F32 doesn't look great without sun protection glass.

With the 442 alloys it's minus £5 a month than stock alloys, and M Sport Plus is only £30 considering. its at £1,900 option so only adds £25 a month as the 442 is part of the package. Shame individual leather costs more. Used to £20 a month cheaper than standard leather through Alphadrive.

Also I'd recommend the F36 GC just due to it's every day practically, particular the boot as I never have rear passenger.

I just checked my Alphadrive and the F32 430xd is the cheapest, F32 435xd is only £10 more, F36 435xd GC is £2 more than that, and the F33 435xd convertible is only £8 more than that.

Come on Fox , The derv haters make me laugh,I went down to Brighton and back to west london mostly 70mph showed 52 mpg. while in Sport I could take most cars.

I passed anAudi RS5 in the middle lane and thought you never see tasty cars on the outside lane ,guess they are looking at the OBC,
I'm often seen clearing the outside lane of the A1 tongue out
I sometimes do the same on the A3, but not in an automatic tractor - still the A1 is probably more rural!

But thanks to the influence of the powerfully built company director obsessed with lease payments, BIK, CO2 emissions and economy we'll sadly never see any more naturally aspirated straight 6 petrol engines in BMWs (or anything else).

And I know diesels are very capable as I had a 123d for over 6 years, but the whole experience is nothing like what I get from my manual petrol straight sixes both of which average the right side of 30 mpg.

But to the OP, if the difference is that little surely the 35d is the only option?

Unless it's £30 a month you don't have...........
