M135i from an E90 330D
Discussion
If you are going to test drive a m135i you should also test the golf r. My mate bought one he was so impressed he bought a second for his mothers run about. He is not at all light with his right foot and gets mid 30's. He went from a 330d and thinks it's ace. Better to drive even then his weekend car which is an Aston V8 vantage. Both on tofu loudly cheap lease deals.
Personally I like rwd, but worth testing both back to back.

We went from E91 335d to M135i; in some situations, the newer car is better on fuel.
We get over 300 miles on a tank; the mpg for such power is amazing.
Even hooning across Europe to Germany, we got 30mpg.
It's also far more fun than any diesel.
We've gone from two diesels to two petrols; far better.

What range were you getting from the 335D?We get over 300 miles on a tank; the mpg for such power is amazing.

I'm getting around 525 to a tank on average.
Good luck with this decision. I gave up a Z4 30sdrive (so not as quick as the M135i) so that wife could get a mini, thinking the 335d as my daily driver would be fine. Great as it the 335d is, we regret the decision quite often. But the consolation is that we both do same kind of mileage as you, which means we're saving about £125 per month in fuel alone.
If you're a high mileage driver the fuel cost becomes (dis)proportionally important unfortunately.

It's crazy really the importance we place on MPG when changing cars, as obviously it's only part of the equation.
I'd got myself in a frame of mind in the last few days that my current 330D was great, offering a fantastic compromise between performance/fuel economy so all was well with the world.
Then I came back to the car to find and M135I 5 door in black parked next to me and I'm undecided again....think it's just an itch I've got to scratch.

The M135i CAN be good on fuel but if it's a primary concern, don't get one.
Our main requirement is for a car that does 300+ miles on a tank; not many quick cars do this but the M135i does. It gets us to a regular client in one go (280 miles).
The car has Eco Pro but it feels like it's broken; we never use it. But in comfort mode on motorways, it's pretty good on fuel.
It's also MUCH more fun to drive than any diesel.

Why stretch to have a car that you have to drive slower than you'd want? Id rather get a 125i and know that I can thrash the pants off it all the time!
Drive it slower than I'd want? Not at all. My question was/is that in the event that I need to use the car on the motorway for a 200 mile slog sat at 70-80 for long periods, is the M135I capable of being relatively fuel efficient? The answer would appear to be yes.
With enthusiastic use obviously fuel economy will drop off massively, and that's fine, I just wanted owners opinions to avoid me being stuck with a car which was incapable of delivering any form of decent economy in any conditions.
Thanks for your help, I'm going to view one on Tuesday.

Seeing as a well specced 125i is more than an M135i, you'd have to be slightly deranged to get the four pot; sales of them are tiny too.
Secondhand they seem better value - even heavily spec'd up ... depends what you want. A 125i is still 6 to 60 ... quick by any standards and capable of 30mpg running around as opposed to maybe 25mpg with an M135i which is dearer. Just depends what you want.I think the125i is a good car but heavily overshadowed by the Golf GTI, Focus ST, Leon Cupra 280, etc.
And if the OP is considering an M135i, I should think he isn't looking at a 125i.
I've yet to see one on the road.
The M135i is a big step up in performance, doesn't have run craps, handles better, stops quicker, sounds much better, etc.

Totally agree, it's a superb car. I'm just saying that, by way of general principle, any car I'd buy I'd want to know that I can afford (as in be prepared to pay rather suggest the OP is poor) drive it as quick as I want whenever I want. I can't think of anything more frustrating that sitting on the motorway at 70ish being passed by diesel rep mobiles because I don't want the mpg to drop below 30 or whatever.
Fair enough though I guess that's exactly what the OP is trying to establish.

I'm with tractor lad - after nearly 10 years of diesel I switched to petrol straight 6 loveliness last year and realised my E46 320td should have been a 325ti and the 123d that followed it should have been a 130i!
Oh well, at least I got there in the end.
Saying that I don't do the miles the OP does, but in the bigger scheme of things if I had the budget for a new M135i I could find the budget to fund its drink habit!
We're only here once, might as well enjoy it!
