Hi Everyone.

I'm after some owners experience as I'm considering changing from my E90 330D which is remapped to 287BHP.

I'm after something a tad smaller, and a hatch would be useful, plus I had an M135I as a loan car and really enjoyed it.

I'm currently averaging around 42 MPG with a mix of motorway, country and London City motoring.

I appreciate that it's not the be all and end all, but in owners experience, what sort of MPG can I expect in the real world on an M135I Auto, is 35MPG readily achievable with a bit all self restraint?

Thanks in advance.

Not really. I'd say more like 30mpg on that kind of driving.

They're economical on motorways, less so around town.

My long term average is about 32mpg after 12,000 miles, but most of this has been on motorways.

My average MPG in ours is about 24 around Milton Keynes, which seems to be a bit of an anomaly, as there's lots of stop-start stuff at each roundabout and short stretches of dual carriageway. I sold it to the Mrs. by quoting BMW's MPG claims and saying it would be more economical than our old 2.0 petrol Jetta. As you can guess, it's quite a bit more thirsty than that, but thankfully she's not too bothered and loves it.

Hmmm, I'll do some sums tonight at the sort of figures discussed to see what's what.

OP, it really depends on your mileage I guess. I only do 6k a year so even 25mpg doesn't bother me. I think 30mpg is achievable on average if you do long runs while allowing some fun. Problem is, it's a slippery slope and you might just end up on 25mpg long term...

I do between 2000-2500 miles a month, claiming 45p per mile for the first 10k, then 25p for those thereafter, from my employer.

As a result, MPG isn't the be all and end all, but if I ended up averaging 25 rather than the best part of 45, the difference comes straight out of my wallet.

Hmm, any chance of borrowing an M135i for longer, to check the mpg for your usage?

If you have to rely on figures, Honest John real mpg contributions, have your 330d at 42mpg and the M135i at 31mpg, about 10% better than a Golf R.

A quick finger in the air calc says I'll be around £1250 a year worse off running an M135i over a 330D, on fuel alone.

Hmmm.......I think I can think of better things to spend a grand and a quarter on per year.

The other problem with that mileage is the tank is the size of a thimble so you will be filling it up every 5 minutes ..

Tank is 50 litres. I can squeeze almost 400 miles out of a tank full, but that is pushing it.

OP, I have averaged 36mpg over 28,000 miles in the 135, that includes a lot of steady mway miles though.

I had a 2006 330d with the dpf removed and mapped, great car very quick but the M135i is chalk and cheese. For start I no longer get 40+mpg I struggle to better 21!,the 1 series Is a lot more nibble and more enjoyable also sounds like a proper car rather then the diesel grumble and if you take it down to DMS in Southampton they can really release the potential of the engine wink

My average over 14k miles is 29mpg and most of that is trundling through town to work.

On a trip to Cornwall at the weekend, with an average speed of 70, i averaged 34.6mpg.

High 30's would be easy with a slightly less leaden foot. Manual box btw.

Just about to tick over 20,000 miles in mine (manual box). I have averaged exactly 28mpg and have an 18 mile each way stop start commute.

On long runs I average anywhere from 31 to 35 mpg, depending on how much opportunity to enjoy myself there is. If you fancy trundling on cruise at 65mph you can average close to 40mpg but what's the point in that?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I like the 330D, but something a tad smaller would be useful for parking in London and a hatchback would fit into family life a bit better.

What really attracted me to the M135I I drove was that in 5 door form and in Grey, it was fairly non descript, and that really appeals!

Still, the whole big engine/small car thing is a winner in my book, and I'm struggling to think of something that would tick as many boxes for me.

I might try and get an extended test drive of one so I can use it properly for a day or so and see if I can make it work.

I had a DMS remapped 330D LCI E92 ... and loved it. Remap to 305bhp. I think an M135i after a remapped 330d would be great fun. When I tried one I only got 24mpg though - whilst I was being restrained !! It went to 18mpg when I put my foot down ! The trip was on 27mpg when I started though. I used to get 38mpg from my 330D

"fairly non descript" is right !! a white one passed me today on the M6 ,very bland looking ,really is.

Incidentally leaving west london at 5 in the morning in my F30 330d I was in knutsford services jun 19 M6 at 7:30 yes I was really shifting! OBC showed 40 mpg. Time I got back to London overall ended at 50.2 MPG. I couldnt take those big petrol mpg figures anymore, would kill me lol.

I went 330d to 335i. The only 'downside' is the mpg difference. 39 ish plays 26 ish as an overall average. The 35i is just a great engine, in either N54 or N55 guise. Haven't looked back and happily trade the mpg difference for the overall driving experience,
