Who Wants a F11 550i M Sport?
Discussion
Putting aside the price discussion and splitting the difference, there really can't be many other contenders for the ultimate all round family wagon for circa £27k?
Sure you have the RS6 and E63 AMG but they are, I would suggest, significantly more to maintain?
There is only 1 E500 estate that I can find and it is similar money but is the older 5.5 V8 vs the turbocharged mill in the 550i.
I think that would be a fantastic buy if you could play some tunes on the price.

I do - it is hard to value as it is extremely rare, desirable to far fewer than a "d" of some description yet, based on a "standard" depreciation curve still worth the money asked.
That said, I have yet to meet a BMW main dealer who did not have some movement in the price especially with big engined petrol models.

It was the "play some tunes" rubbish that confused me.

Plenty of car, but the truth is at that price still depreciation pain to come in spades.
I see it as a better buy at £25k for someone.
I don't get this at all. All modern cars depreciate, it's just what happens. They are all in a race down to 5k. When you buy it at 25k in 18 months with 30k miles on it, it's still got 20k to lose.I see it as a better buy at £25k for someone.
I bought my 550i when it was 6 years old with 60k for somewhere between 10 and 15k... I'll also be losing money on depreciation, but so what, it's life. Cars are a depreciating asset unless you go classic or limited run Pork/hypercar.
In summary, if you snooze, you'll lose. For us petrolheads the future is bleak. If you want a 530D then no problem, there's billions of those. If you want a silky V8... well no-one is buying them anymore so unicorns like this need to be seized.

Buying at 10 - 15k the bulk of depreciation has been done. At 30k still falling off the cliff.
It's no reflection on the car, just the market.
So much want for this car!
Just picked up a 2005 545i SE Touring for £6,600 and it is just brilliant after a gearbox oil change.
An F11 550i M-Sport... That has to be cock-on perfect for sleeper family duties!
I can see one of these being on the shopping list in a couple of years, hopefully with a few quid more depreciation in the meantime!

I don't believe I have. Depreciation is depreciation. Doesn't really matter where in the curve it is, the only thing that matters is your personal circumstances and perspective and if you can afford it. Buying at 10 - 15k the bulk of depreciation has been done. At 30k still falling off the cliff.

I personally have an aversion to it and also would get the heeby jeebies about paying more than 15k for a car. So I choose not to. Other people are far more wealthy than I and buy cars like this brand new for 70k and don't give a st. The previous (original) owner of my car was also one of these people. Other people are less wealthy or wouldn't pay more than 5k for a car, and are sat happily in an E39 540i.
All your point shows is where on the scale you are.

Most new 5 series are leased, to control the depreciation.
A cash buyer of a £30k car still depreciating is quite a rare beast?

I recently missed out on a low miles S6 for around 30k private sale. A dealer snapped up and added 5k... Sure you have the RS6 and E63 AMG but they are, I would suggest, significantly more to maintain?
