Yes, totally agree on this, it is not a GT86, a car where you are constantly looking for torque...In daily use at legal speed the 300 or more Nm you probably get from the engine at 2000rpm are more than enough for brisk progress, while if you are asking for performance why shouldn't you rev it up? Listen to stuart-b hes talking absoloute sense.
Im in a similar position coming from a 130i at the moment but the previous car was a mapped 335d.
The 130i is a great little car but been missing that midrange punch recently so have been looking at alternatives.
Ive been in a lot of the cars mentioned but at the weekend went out in a 430bhp 335i that was sorted with bilstein coilovers / jb4 / eexhaust etc etc
Long story short it really surprised me we didn't even get to map 5 on the jb4 which is the highest output map and it blew me away. And not just straight line grunt from 2000rpm but the way the thing cornered was really really good.
The n54 seems fairly bulletproof and have now read lots of reports on cars with standard internals (obviously upgraded turbos etc) running 600 to 700bhp.
Not that you have to go that mad as a sorted one with the standard turbos running a max of 18psi would be a weapon.

All depends if you're bothered how the numbers are achieved and the way the car feels as you drive, the 335d is quick but doesn't feel it, no drama, quite dull to drive and you cannot get away from the fact that it sounds like a diesel (which it is)
A CP M3 is a lovely thing the chassis tweaks make the car, the engine is a masterpiece, the noise and throttle response are a joy to experience and it's so long legged it makes a 335d feel asthmatic.
I went from a CP M3 to a 335d xdrive and within 20 yards I knew I'd made a shocking mistake.

Honest question - spending £40k plus options on a car surely you took a proper test drive, if not why not as that oversight is likely o cost you thousands to change to another car in s short timeframe. (I understand you bought the bloody amazing F10 M5 30Jarah - will you disclose ball park £ lost in this cost to change?). Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I’m in a similar position. The 35d is sensible performance - economy and straight line shooter. I have ACS coil overs, uprated ARB’s... despite the EGR cooler palaver I still can’t find anything suitable as a replacement. Mechanically the car is sound (touch wood). Audi is meh. The 3.0 TDi has issues. The 5/6’er are too big for my needs. I tried a Mercedes C63 but it broke down mid test drive. The salesman was embarrassed. So yeah... in a position to change and want to but can’t seem to find a rival worthy to consider.

Handbuilt engines will be far more reliable than others - though all should be near perfect/never fail just bodywork instead.
Having had my 335d the last 6 months, I have come to appreciate its no nonsense performance, versatility and quite extraordinary economy. Does it in any way make a more "emotional" case for itself? Absolutely not!
As I use my car for longdistance driving only, I am starting to have thoughts about a 2 or 3 year old 740dX to enjoy unstressed fast cruising in much greater comfort and with an extraordinary range.

Same. Motorway munching. 20k a year but also our village is quite hilly so it doesn’t break a sweat dealing with steep gradients.
