And it failed . . .

Hand brake is not working efficiently. I whipped the wheels off and adjusted the handbrake but this made absolutely no difference, it and therefore been bunged into a garage to have a look at it as I need it sorted ASAP.

Entirely possible at this point that I simply didn't adjust them right, as they seem to be balanced but just not working anything like they should be.

FWIW I slacked off the cables, adjusted the shoes until I could no longer spin the disc and then backed them off so the discs would spin, wheels back on and slack taken off the cables. As I say, made no difference (although it felt quite different to me!)
My old E36 did the same. The inside of the brake disc was basically so corroded and full of crud, there simply wasn't any flat surface area for the adjusted shoes to work effectively. New pair of discs and back to normal service.

I was going to say that. Either that or the shoes inside of the hat of the disc have delaminated, that can also happen. Best course of action is new rear discs, probably pads, and handbrake shoes too. I also find it much easier to adjust with the discs off. That tiny hole barely allows for any adjustment. Also to stave this off drive a few yards with the handbrake on lightly every so often. Same principal as removing surface rust from the face of the discs.

The discs and pads were new on the back last October. Could be the handbrake shoes although they looked ok.

Got a pass. Garage who looked at it couldn't identify a specific problem, just did a general clean up.

Seems a lot better anyway.

Ambitiously priced, but looks like it could be a lot of fun!

I know I've already mentioned it, and Mgd_uk was kind enough to send me a replacement switch, but I got the switch installed (had to buy one in the end as sadly Mgd_uk had a passenger side switch and I needed the driver side!) and now the window regulator seems to be screwed up.

How unlucky is it that both have broken at the same time?! The switch would not put the window up, and now the regulator can only move the window up and down about an inch. I had to put the window up manually the other day. Sister in law had a great trip down the M25 the other day with the windows right down stuck in the back, hah!

I've ordered a repair kit for the window regulator, so hopefully that'll sort my problems.

Finally got round to fitting the catch tank and pcv setup as listed here, done about 200 miles now and oil hasn't moved on the dipstick so looks like it has fixed my massive oil usage (1l per 300 miles) so thanks for the tips! Need to find somewhere to mount the catch tank permanently now as I temporarily mounted it where the cold air feed is meant to be as I didn't buy long enough hoses. I'm thinking in the empty space at the rear of the passenger side of the engine bay - where I previously stored my frequently used oil top up bottles!

I did notice while removing the CCV that I think my top intake boot is the wrong one for the car. I assume the correct one for the 325ti should have a hole at the bottom to connect to the sound generator? I think mine has been replaced with a standard e46 one at some point in the past? I assume these aren't too pricey from BMW? Had a quick look on ebay but looks like they are listing standard e46 ones to fit the 325ti.

I would imagine a little poking around on realOEM will yield a part number that you need. I can't imagine that it is all that costly though. I don't know if there is a massive difference with the sound thing plugged in

Looking at around £15.00 from BMW for that I believe.

I have a track/road compact 325 ti with a M54b30 lump fitted and various other mods. I have 17" alloys for the track, but would like something bigger for the road, just wondered what size a e46 compact can have or go to?

Mine runs 18s, and they're as big as you can go really. Anything larger means rubbing with anything more than the boot carpet in the back.

Yes, 18s were an optional fit size - if you look at the o/s jamb it will give you the sizes BMW recommend

Mine has a set of 18" MV2's on it, rears seem to be wider than the fronts.

I also converted mine from 316ti to 330ti and 6speed box for the track :-)

Sad I know, but I've got some of the BMW promotional material for the Compact and the largest option I can find listed is the 18 inch MV2s - 8 inch front, 8.5 inch rear.

But it is an E46, so wouldn't 19s from an E46 M3 fit?

All this talk of 330tis - why, oh why didn't BMW make one? mad

The only thing I'd be wary of with the E46 M3 polished 19s is the offset, particularly on the rears. It's quite a bit different to other E46s.

If you ever get a set of the Style 68s in 17" make sure you get the none M3 bespoke ones - they look a bit weird otherwise

Had a nightmare with my window this weekend! The up/down just doesn't work now. It's the regulator or the cabling, not the switch, as that was recently replaced.

Has anyone got a guide for actually accessing the regulator and all the cabling on a compact? Absolutely everything that I've found shows the door on any car but the compact! When you get the door off and that awful vapour sealing barrier, the metalwork of the door frame covers the regulator so that you can't get at it or any of the clips cable etc.

What I did find, with the door card off, was that the clips look absolutely fine. The cable, however, is close to breaking so there are loads of snapped and heavily frayed wires making up the main cable, and I reckon those are what are causing the problem. Obviously, therefore, I need to replace the cable first but I can't access anything at all. So so infuriating!! There was a lot of swearing yesterday...

Please help! I really don't want to take this to a garage as I know that they only problem is that I can't access the thing - quite competent enough to change it when I've got bloody access to it.

A used gen BMW regulator is better than a new aftermarket one.

If anyone has the Haynes manual, would they mind having a look in there for me to see if it's got a guide on removing the regulator? A photo of this would be massively helpful for me.

Is it not the same as the saloon? Unbolt glass, lift up, unbolt regulator and remove?
