335i new turbos
Discussion
Hi, my 335i has just had brand new turbos, oil feeds pipes, fresh oil and filters, gaskets etc fitted. Is there a recommended run in period for these or is it ok to use as before? Would it be beneficial to fit a new oil filter and fresh oil after 1,000mls? I recall having a new turbo fitted to my old RS Turbo and a Cosworth back in the 90's and it was fine to use as normal straight away with out any run in period.
Any advice would be most appreciated after just picking the car up today and spending a fair wedge on it...

I have definitely read, reckon it was on E90 post, about changing oil in those circumstances.
I would have thought the installers would have said, if there was a big concern on break in. If it were me, I would treat car as normal.

- As I'm also from South Wales and may need this done in the future, is it okay to ask how much and who did it?
Hi Smuler, the total cost was £2846. Labour costs, 2 brand new turbos, new oil feed/return pipes, various exhaust and oil feed gaskets, fresh oil, oil filter, air filter. I used an Indy near Treharris after a recommendation from a car trader I know who deals in performance/prestige marques and has had 335i's with waste gate rattle sorted there previously. If you would like any more info/breakdown of bill etc. send me an e-mail on here...

Why do these cars and many others seem to regularly eat turbos?
Whenever I see them for sale they have had new turbos. Same with the RS6.
I dont see this happening with Subaru or Mitsubishi when they only seem to be replaced for upgrades rather than failures.
Vorsprung durch cost cutting.Whenever I see them for sale they have had new turbos. Same with the RS6.

Ah, the Vorsprung thing!
A former colleague of mine had an A4 1.8 turbo that had to be replaced at just over 50K miles. He traded it for a 523i afterwards, then within a year got posted to the States so had to sell it!
TBH stories like this about turbos, HPFPs and injectors make me think the last great non-M 6 cylinder BM was the N52, but as I have one I may be biased! It is great though!

They don't eat them, they were designed terribly from the factory and the wastegates wear quickly and rattle.Whenever I see them for sale they have had new turbos. Same with the RS6.

Eventually the wastegates don't seal and you get boost issues.
