Once upon a time you could pretty much tell what engine was under the bonnet because of the exhaust configuration but not any more it seems, I suppose they are just bringing the 3/4 series in line with the 5 series because the current 520d has had twin exhausts for a while now.

Plus in this day age the 4 pot diesel engine is king...I am hoping its a far better engine now than it was in my 2009 520d because that engine was a sack of st!
Well that's pretty crap! I'm going to put the badges back on mine now!

I run pilot sport 3's on my standard MK5 R32 wheels - 225/45/18 - and their the best overall tyre ive ever used. the wet grip being amazing. The car is currently on 19'' BBS wheels, so ive opted for slightly cheaper Goodyear Eagle F1's 225/35/19 - still a cracking tyre though. wouldn't hesistate to put either on the 4 series once the time comes...which hopefully should be thousands of miles away yet!

Just out of curiosity what can I expect miles wise out of these runflats with everyday, normal driving as an estimation?
Well my rears on the 6GC have given up after 17k :/

They do get very noisy when worn or close to needing changing from my experience.
I've heard this before about RFT's, but didn't notice any difference at all with the set on my 6GC (Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 275/30r20's). The cars just been in for its first MOT and been told the rears need replacing, sure I would have noticed had there been a significant change in noise level.

Pretty annoying timing, as I'm likely to be changing the car in a few months and its only done 17k miles. The damn things are £240 each, all ears if anyone can suggest somewhere to get them cheaper :/
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx are a pretty quiet tyre to be fair but I did notice the fronts get a little louder but they were well worn, the cheapest I saw for a replacement was £237 for a rear tyre, I was fortunate that all four needed changing at the same time so ditched the runflats and went with normal tyres instead.

I think the 435d should have the same exhaust set up as the 435i to be fair and have one each side and I would love to know why it hasn't.

We managed almost 40k miles out of the Bridgestone Potenza run flat tyres (18") on our old E90 330d but it was used as a high mileage motorway car mostly and the tyre fitter said we had done really well the stretch them that far!

I would imagine the norm to be 20k to 25k miles, I have always found run flats to wear pretty uneven too and its always the inside or outside edge that goes first whereas the rest of the tyre is fine.

They have worn exactly like this for us a few times and a quick glance at the tyre its absolutely fine but the inside edge is down to the threads! it was the same on the 640d and I only noticed it because I was aware of how they went the same on the 330d.

Run flats are meant to stay on the rim too but I had the rear left one on the 330d come off the rim at about 60mph on the motorway and it certainly came as a shock but thankfully I just crawled to a halt onto the hard shoulder.

I am not a big fan of run flats its safe to say.

Tank capacity of the F3x diesels is only 57 litres?
Yeah it is, I knew that.

I know I had worked out that 450 miles is 36mpg before, 57 litres is 12.5 gallons, so 36mpg.

I bet they reduced the tank size to keep the official figures down, having 57 litre tank instead of 64 litres will reduce weight, as they have to have a 90% full tank when doing the test.

You're probably right but a bit of a shame in my view; one of the reasons for choosing diesel is the longer range and fitting a smaller tank just compromises that IMO. As a minimum I think the F3x diesels should have been given the same size tank as the equivalent model in the E9x range (61 litres?) and personally I think 65 or perhaps even 70 litres would have been more like it.....

But everything is designed for the official tests these days I suppose?

But yeah, an 80 litre tank you can spec on Mercs would be great, and 800 mile range would be lovely.

Yeah, that disappointed me!
