Had a E90 330d and currently got a E90 330i both 2006 models, the 330d feels miles faster even if it actually isn't but the 330i sounds far nicer, both cracking motors though and I still cant make my mind up on which one I ultimately prefer if I am honest.

The 330i feels flatter than a pancake at low revs compared to the 330d but it has a few more revs to enjoy and makes a nice noise while doing it, the 330d is far better on fuel though.

Yeah, if you look at the sport auto figures, above 160kph the N52 330i manual easily matches a 335d. But that does go against PH folklore biggrin

Above 100-odd mph? That's sounds really useful for road driving.

Must be about real world pace, otherwise why not just look up the official figures?!

Real world pace, I don't think anyone is doubting that the diesels would be hard to keep up with.

Haha!
I hope that's meant ironically.

What does real world pace mean ? On the road the limiting factors will be line of sight, traffic, licence preservation and skill. Should be very easy to keep up with a diesel driving a NA petrol, unless of course one can't use the gear change optimally.

Blasphemy! Torque is king! A 2.0d Audi will leave a Ferrari standing 'in the real world'.

Probably not, but the over-priced VAG option will doubtless have multiple exhausts so it must surely be a supercar?

Rucking fubbish IMHO!

I love topics like this...

My Tdi can keep up with a Ferrari F40....in the REAL WORLD.

Where is this magical real world? Glad I don't live there.

I've had both diesel and petrol BMWs of varying vintages, engine size and transmissions.

Ultimately it all comes down to preference - and sadly "real world" does tend to make virtually all modern cars pretty much the same performance wise, unless you go out and about late at night when the traffic has died down.

I had diesels for 130 mile daily commutes which did 55mpg and I currently have an e90 330i as my daily which does 27mpg for a far smaller commute - either way when I'm driving my car (which usually involves being in traffic) other than noise whose fastest rarely comes into it - its preference.

Either way the 330 i or d are both impressive cars, unless you are totally on the edge on a clear road there's nothing between the two, other than sound and economy - then again flat out they'd both like a drink!

Agree with all of that.

Yes, great cars and a mile ahead of the opposition.

I'm lucky enough to own an E36 M3 Evo as a weekend car and I can honestly say that whilst I will always love the M3 (I'm an 80's child and the M3 was my poster car) that had I driven an m3 after owning the 330i for a while I'm not sure I would have bought one. As it was I bought the M3 whilst I had a 320td BMW so it was chalk and cheese - but the 330i for an all round package whilst not an M3, really is a cracking car - a lasy waft to work in the mornings and has some legs if I want a slightly more exciting trip home.

I originally was looking for an E90 330d to chip it since nothing in the same price bracket comes close to those - however having read into the reliability of the diesels and having had a few BMW diesels do their thing - eating turbos and alike I opened up my search and found a 330i with full BMW s/h and 63k miles for £3.7k - manual straight 6 N52 engine - one of the last BMW manuals and NA engines they are likely to make - couldn't say no - put in another £1k for 18" BMW wheels and the M-sport kit and its a nice looking car, goes well and should be pretty reliable!

Indeed, if you have driven any N52 equipped car, you'll find it very difficult to go back to diesel. But if you haven't, you'll probably still find a diesel acceptable.

3.7k!! That's unreal what a deal. I paid 8k for mine although it's an auto m sport. Appologies to everyone I got mixed up at the start its only my 2nd Beemer and not used to all the letters and numbers yet it's the e90 version and so is my mates 330d. 4 door saloons. Got to say coming from a diesel it does make it feel that bit special the noise and revs etc but a lot on here are right, in the real world it's hard to be able to get on the road and take it beyond 5k revs. Nevermind though I'm still happy

Just out of interest has anyone driven an N52 & N53 330i, and is there much difference in performance?

+1

Replaced an N47 diesel with an N52 - wonderful!

Based on that bought an M54 petrol as a daily - will never have a diseasel again!

Don't have the brave pills for an N53 - too many reports of HPFP, injector issues for my comfort zone, just for one lower RFL band!
