Following advice from opie oils I ended up ordering Gulf formula gvx 5w30 fully synthetic oil. He said it's a very good oil and is heavily discounted at the moment, it's usually a similar price to castrol edge etc from what I gather.

Ordered 2x5L bottles plus 1x1L bottle and that was just over £50! Annoyingly, however, I received 1x5L and 2x1L bottles! They're shipping out another 5L bottle and said I can keep the extra 1L.....so I'll have plenty for the change and also topping up.

Tim from opie oils also said that engine oil isn't just engine oil, and some oils meet the spec, and others exceed it. Said the Gulf stuff was good so I've gone with that, bargain at the moment!

I bought 20L of Fuchs LL04 from a mechanic in Germany. He used Fuchs in his Porsche. It's a very good oil from what I am told by scientists that also enjoy analysing oils!

Phew, a lengthy thread!

I worked for Shell for 36 years, initially wagon-bashing but mostly at their research and development facility in Cheshire, UK. I spent 12 years in their engine testing department, testing and developing fuels & engine oils. Same as all the other big oil cos, engines were run for thousands of hours, following standard test cycles (load, speed etc) and then rated afterwards comparing the oils/fuels used.
According to our peeps Shell oil was the best (of course) but it was only by the smallest fraction.
For my car I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W30, on eBay at £20 for 5L can.
For my motorbike I use Shell Advance Ultra 10W40, because I have ~50L of it in my shed 😊
Whilst I have a Shell affiliation I’d happily use an oil from the other oil majors, because I’m prepared to pay the extra because I choose to.
I reckon Comma oil will do a great job too.

A bit like Waitrose houmous vs Aldi houmous, both great but which do you choose to buy?

Wow, holy thread revival!

I’ve just put 5w30 shell helix ultra ( the one that meets LL04 ) in my car.

8.4 litres off Opie, cars an BMW 550, with the N62 engine.

Jest get millers easy to identify the spec as they
Pay to put the ll04 spec on the tub, unlike Castrol
Good price too.

After all these years things have changed!

A few years ago my BMW Indy told me BMW had stopped using Castrol and had switched over to Shell Helix Ultra, so that's what my 3 Series gets now when I take it there.

Working at a large European vehicle manufacturer, I know that with regards fuel, our fuel chemist definitely reckoned Shell was the best fuel.

I ran an e38 740 from 70k to over 200k miles over 6 years and then a 2005 650 from 38k miles to over 200k over 9 years. I have always used Mobil 1 of the correct spec. Both cars used no oil between services.
I am sticking with Mobil1.

A correctly serviced car with the correct oil spec is just fine regardless of brand. Oil does not degrade as such it simply collects contaminants, therefore it not the oil used that matters, it's the service intervals that matter most.

Interestingly when Honda serviced my civic last year, they used Shell oils as well, despite often being associated with Castrol oils.

I use castrol in my motorcycle, but might try Shell. I dont k now what differenct I'll b expecting though (and it gets changed every 2500 miles anyway!)

^^

This; another thing too many folk get hung up on unfortunately

Paying through the nose for oil that meets the necessary specs, but it's labelled Shell, or Castrol, or Fuchs etc

Like you said; use the correct spec oil for your car but change it more often than the stated changes (sometimes far too many miles or time between changes IMPO) and it'll be absolutely fine

I use TripleQX 5W40 oil in my 530i touring; costs me £35 for 10 litres & a Mann filter delivered; I change it twice a year and for less than a full tank of VPower!
