So I am looking at an X5 that by chance i found it's been to the dealers 19 times over 7 years, I have called the dealers but they say they can't give me the info because data information protection act..

1 owner all those years so clearly it wasn't bad enough for them to get rid, but anyway..

If anyone has a bmw insider that can help me get the info please PM me, the data protection is obviously bks, I mean what am I going to with that info that can harm anyone??

Thanks,
Fred

That's balls
Speak to a different dealer.

I got the entire history for my 335i from the dealer including invoices since the car was new.
All they did was blank out the personal details of the previous owner.

It could be small things that the owner was never happy about and it had BMW warranty so it was all done under warranty.

With CBS that does sound out of the way.

Walk away big time. Data Protection Act has nothing to do with this, you aren't asking for personal information about the previous owner.

A dealer should be competely transparent about a vehicle's history. Sounds like they are hiding something.

How many miles has it done?

The X5 has a lot of individual service items rather than fewer large items so mileage is material to how many times it should have been in.

Totally agree you need to know what it was in for as it could be fine or could be for the same item multiple times. If the owner was picky, he will have dealt with things like the design defect to the rear light seals that see them fill with water over time. At £250 a corner its good to have done and I'd rather know that had been fixed than buy a car that had been in less times because items of this nature hadn't been sorted

It's done 70k miles.

When I say I called the dealer I mean I called the BMW dealership who serviced the car and did the work, it's not them selling the car (private sale) so they have no reason to hide anything from me. But this main dealer wouldn't give me the information. He listed all the services done including exactly what they did, but said they were not allowed to give the details of the additional visits!

Those visits could also include MOTs if that's where they were done. The visit record covers everything.

It was the first owner of the car that owned it all those years and had it in and out of the BMW garage. It was crashed (not bad, I've seen the pics Cat D), sold at auction by the insurance company where this seller bought and fixed it to sell on. So the seller doesn't have the info. There are no books, and only one key.. Yes I know, most people would not walk, but RUN

Of course all this makes the car cheap, or I wouldn't consider it. But it could be a good car for me as it will be the family car for the next few years, and I am not bothered about paperwork.

But the 19 visits is a bit of a concern. MOT's is a good point, also there was a visit for front brakes and strangely this they would tell me. The guy I spoke to at BMW commented that it had been well looked after but would not let on whether there had been any on-going issues or not, I find this strange!

I genuinely wouldn't worry about it.

the data protection covers the previous owners details. I bought a e92 330i which had sytner stamps in the book. I rang them up and they happily told me that cars entire service history including all the recall work it's had.

Ring the BMW Hotline, they will tell you everything.

Costs a bit though.

They don't though, they can only see where it's been and when, not what was done. I was on the phone to them and they said to call the dealer who had the car in and they would provide more details. Only they didn't :-D

Cost £1/minute

This is probably far fetched.

I would ask the seller that you are aware its been in 17 times and you would like to know the reasons.
It could have been for a few faults, at least the owner noticed them and got it fixed.

On the other side of the coin you could have someone who experienced an issue and thought that it was nothing and never bothered to visit the dealer and then you inhert this problem.

I usually give my cars into the dealer for the tiniest of things because I like the car to be kept tip top.

So it's actually been to two dealers, spoke to the other dealer who gave me all the info i requested straight away! Very strange that the other wouldn't?

Anyway, It was just small bits and pieces so I'm just gonna go ahead.

Thanks
