I've had a couple of shots of my girlfriend's dad's 535d. Feels like a 4.0 litre-plus petrol waft-mobile like a 740 or Lexus 430. Only showing 25 mpg on the 'puter so far, so it's not quite the saviour of the world everyone's making it out to be. As for being an M5 beater, maybe a circa 1987 E18(?) but none of the rest. Nice motor though.

p.s. Dinkel who are this "elite" of which you speak ya snob.

Has there ever been a diesel car in Max Power?

I love the 535d tourer in silver. I'm sure it's a great car - but come on, diesel next to a Petrol V10? Business users maybe, private buyer with the cash and a love for long waiting lists? No contest IMHO

I floored my e39 540 sport the other day and assumed the 5 behind me was a 545i, stuck with me to a very high speed, I pulled over and let it pass, imagine my suprise when it said 535d on the back!
Impressive for an oil-burner.

Impressive as a 535D is it is no match for a 545. The latter having 333hp. Given it would struggle to hit 155 I bet the last 20 mph would be snail like.

I can imagine how many 535 owners will be be thinking their car is Ferrari quick.

The beauty of diseasels is the ability to get em chipped ......

30% extra power for 500 notes would take it to, oooh 350 horse, plus a veritable mountain of torque.

My previous 530d was chipped and it was, subjectively, not far off the pace of my current M3. Certainly in-gear acceleration in the range 40-100 was a match for the M, which for real-world (not ultimate top end) is where you need/want the performance. It did, admittedly, start to run out of puff as it got to 130+, but with 270-odd HP and being heavier than the current 535, it gives an indication of what the 535d should be able to do once the tuners get their hands on it. I'm certainly looking at it seriously....

Very good point: last night, I found myself with the headlights of a 911 (no idea which one but a 996 derivative, I'd concluded) up my chuff, at an 'energetic' amble oop the m-way home...

No matter how much carpet was mashed, cog dropped or sport button frantically selected, this infernal blob was simply having none of it: shaking orf was not going to happen.

It reminded me, that no matter how fast you think a particular car is, how capable in this or that respect, there is always a grand master lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce and reduce you to a bumbling wreck of a karate kid novice.

Yes it true you can get her into the low 20 mpg's with very vigorous driving, the kind that has an S4 for example not even registering into the teens.

I have the sport touring model (should update profile I guess) Its a very capable holdall, and a pleasure to drive with totally accesible, effortless real pace.

Probably people who keep cars in shape.
As time goes by and owners go by most Beemers turn into spoilered and stickered Chavmobiles. This diesel won't. Ever. Because you can't fit a Remus with a naughty tip to produce a hp-boasting soundbite.
"Hey, mate check da diesel. Kick phat cool!"

Is that 2.85bar turbo boost figure correct? Seems awfully high.

I thought that too.... That's utterly gigantic boost.

(I'm running 1 bar)

1 bar is atmospheric pressure. If you are running 1 bar it will be 2 bar absolute, and 1 bar relative (to atmospheric pressure).

The 0-100 time really impressed me. I think my first Elise s2 was slower to 100 (although much quicker to 30, and slightly quicker to 60 ) and whilst I know that is an Apples for Oranges comparison it is impressive!

I agree that it would be no patch on an e60 m5. I would expect it to take a complete thrashing from an e39 M5 too, but I would hazard a guess that it would pretty much keep tempo with the seminal e34 M5 and possibly an e39 540 as mentioned...and that, for a diesel car that is capable of handsome frugality in the MPG department, would impress me to buggery.

Got to say I'm seriously tempted to try one out and swap the M3 for it .....

Just not so sure about the interior, and the exterior only looks good in dark colours......

Exactly what I am doing - but I was doing 3000 miles a month in the m3 so it makes a lot of sense in all respects.

As for the interior, for an extra 2k (on a 535d sport) you can go individual 2 and get custom leather and trim, and for sports models, carbon black looks luvverly

I was given a loan 5 series to try out and I couldn't get passed the switch gear and expanse of bear panels. Those switches are cheap and nasty.

The 5 series is nothing cf the 7
