More interesting will be the 335d - has anyone driven this yet? I drove the 535d (saloon, unmodified) last week and thought it was such an awesome all-rounder, I almost ordered one to replace the Mrs aging Cayenne Turbo. The Cayenne is an impressive machine, no question, but if you press on you get less than 10mpg, not to mention the appetite for Mobil 1. And lets not talk about depreciation! In the real world, on the road, the BM will quite easily keep up with the Cayenne, but all this comparing with 'real' sports cars is getting a bit silly. My daily driver is a Porsche 997TT which replaced a Porsche 996C4S and the handling, balnce, composure, not to mention exclusivity of these cars is way out the BM's league. But as an all-round and (relatively) cheap to buy/run sports/executive/family/cruiser, I don't think it gets better than the 535D, so will most probably buy one very soon... unless anyone has any better ideas?
totally agree
Great thread... I'm still not sure if my 535d needs more power that warrants the grief/aggravation that would accompany it by way of potential warranty issues, additional premiums & reduced re-sale values. A M5 has to be the answer.
PS although I am mainly concerned with on track & high value off track insurances, I for one would have a forensic engineer doing every diagnostic under the sun, if I thought a road car involved in an accident had a non-disclosed upgrage that was material/or a contributory factor to an accident. As an indication how thorough things can get, we once had a DB9 engine stripped to find out what was going on - be warned!

I've been watching this for a while. I love our 535d but I get a bit frustrated because the gearbox often feels slow in low gears. Pulling out from a T junction, for instance, there often seems to be a moment of hesitation before it starts to move. Do people think that a re-map would help with this?

I have the same issue with my 330D, it's either all or nothing and sometimes get the feeling that I am going to be left stranded in the middle of the road....then whoooosh and off we go. Only down side of the car, I now select S and then Manual before pulling out.Pilgrim20vt said:

That's a "feature" of the ZF box - unless you're at a complete standstill it wants to start off in 2nd and then when you tip the pedal a bit more the car shfts into first and then it takes off. Try shifting into sport mode but without shifting manually.phelix said:

I think the new 535d wih active cruise control slows you to a stop and starts you off to the set speed so thats what would be my ideal for congestion traffic.
I found doing the throttle reset helps quite a bit, but the DMS does its bit to help also.
Shameless plug, but Ive just put my special order Schnitzer car up for sale if anyone is interested.....

Thread resurrection !!
I'm getting very tempted to Sell my 535D Touring and get another M5 (e60) I had an e39 M5 and loved it to bits...... Not bothered to DMS the 535d yet , but I hate the Auto box, I think I would like the SMG in comparison.
anybody got a nice 55 plate - 06 M5 for sale???

have to say - having gone from an E39 M5 to a 535d, i wouldnt do it again. Big dervs are a little bland driving wise, mpg around town is 28/30 which in the scheme of things isnt great. Auto box is a little lazy...but the main problem is i dont think theres enough knowledge out there regarding them. They have been around only since 2004 (twin turbo dervs), and in their later life (as ive experienced) they can be expensive to repair (plugs, dpf etc)
I think a 520d is worth the effort to get the mpg etc, but i dont think the performance from a 535d is mind blowing or worth the uncertain costs with the complexity of it...
...am i on my own here or does anyone else get my point???
lol

Having owned a 535d for 18 months I'm pretty much with you. Mine was LCI and yet fuel consumption around town (central London) pretty awful sometimes. Better on a run of course. Very fast when you put foot to carpet but somehow soulless. Then it got nicked which doesn't help me have fond memories of it.
I'm very happy to have reverted to E39 530i the M54 is a cracking engine, consumption around town no worse.
