I've owned 5 BMWs over the last fifteen years, all FE/RWD and all have worn their tyres at exactly the same rate front to rear (I check them every Dec and March when I switch to winters). This is why BMWs are FE/RWD: it's the most balanced layout in terms of loadings on the chassis in cornering. I haven't owned or driven an X Drive model, but it doesn't surprise me at all that they wear their fronts more, I would have thought that's normal and to be expected.
You surprise me! I've also owned a number of BMW's over the last 10 years (all RWD) and without exception they all wore their rears more quickly than the fronts; on my M3 CS and E92 335i the rears would last for about 18k miles but I'd get double that out of the fronts! I'd only expect the fronts to wear more quickly than the rears on a front-drive car but perhaps not.....
I suspect that driving style and power output affect this. On that second point, your M3 and 335i have quite a bit more power than my BMWs have had (I've owned a 325i, 328i, 330ci, Z4C and 320d). Another, perhaps more minor point is weight in the car - it's almost always just me driving, occasionally with a 7kg bike or 10-20kg of stuff in the boot. I never take rear passengers. Finally there's the roads you drive on of course - sat at 70 on the motorway all cars are obviously going to wear front and rear equally!

My Caterhams also wore the front and rears equally. The cars I've owned that haven't have had less balanced weight distribution, such as my two Lotuses or my first car, a Citroen AX GT.

This ^^^

However I've just sold a 2013 120 D MSport with 40k miles (of which I did 32k miles in the last 16 months) and it was still on its original front AND rear tyres ... Rears had 2.6 - 3mm, the fronts had 3-4mm yikes
The combined 300k miles I did in my E46 330D and my E90 335D wore rear tyres out at twice the rate of the fronts.

Tend not to carry passengers either (only very occasionally in the back). In terms of driving style, I don't actually think I'm especially heavy with the right foot - there are people who would castigate me for getting almost 20k miles from a set of rears on an M3 and say I wasn't trying anywhere near hard enough! smile

Seepang blue pearl paint, black pack, panoramic roof, rear side airbags, head up display, privacy glass, front and rear heated seats, tow bar, speed limit display, 3 spoke heated wheel, advanced key, audi connect + phone box, parking pack advanced, assistance pack and... wait for it... (I can hear the screams already)... 21" black gloss alloys hehe

As drmark has said, life is (far, far) too short - buy the damned car (bike / holiday / delete as appropriate) biggrin

Have to say though that the 19" alloys on the F31 with adaptive suspension rode very well. I also used 18" winter wheels and tyres during the winter (about 10 months a year up here!!) and they were great too. Certainly more compliant but I enjoyed the swap between wheels (19"->18" and 18"->19") every year... almost like changing my car every 6 months.
Very nice...
What have you done with your Bmw winter set of wheels???

They're going to go up for sale... p.m. me if you're interested! biggrin

They are still at the local tyre guys (the business of friends of our family) and they store them for me over the 'summer'. I need to get them back and I can get some photos if you'd like. They are 18" turbine style 415 but completely refurbished in gun metal grey. thumbup

I also swap from 19" summer (Bridgestone Potenza RFT, soon to be replaced with Michelin PSS non-RFT) to 18" winters (Sottozero RFT) and enjoy the swap both ways. Interesting to hear that someone else likes doing this - I thought I was alone in actually enjoying the change of wheels and the feel of driving a different car.

I find particularly going between staggered summer(255,225) and square winter (225) changes the handling characteristics significantly.
hehe

I also like the fact the alloys are different styles, so not only does the car handle differently it also looks different - probably another reason I've kept the car as long as I have! biggrin

A bit off topic (so apologies for that!) but after around 21k miles I'm getting to the point of needing a couple of tyres on my F31 335d; however, slightly to my surprise it's the fronts that have worn more than the rears. With X-Drive I was expecting similar wear for all four tyres or, with supposedly a rear-drive bias, the rears to wear if anything slightly faster than the fronts. Therefore, is this wear pattern normal on an X-Drive? Come replacement time I'm thinking I'll move to conventional tyres but to do that it looks like I'll be throwing away a pair or rears with a fair bit of tread left!
I would expect an xDrive to wear front tyres faster than an equivalent sDrive, both from putting some drive through the front, and the additional weight at the front. That does sound unusual to me that your fronts are wearing more than the rears though. Mine look fairly even front to back, although I haven't measured them. I am just waiting for them to wear enough so I don't feel too bad about ditching them for Michelin PSS non-rft. I have done almost 20k miles on my current summer set. The only other xDrive I have had was an X5 which got through two sets of rears in the time it took to wear the fronts.

I know exactly what you mean - the switching it helps to keep the car fresh and interesting. My old X5 gave me the best contrast between summers and winters, both in terms of ride/handling and looks. I went from 17" 235 wide winters, to 20" 315/285 wide summers. It was really quiet and comfortable on the winter set, it just handled like a canal boat!
