2 Series Gran Tourer

The 2 car is much bigger in the back than either a 3 or 5 series tourer, both for seating, and luggage.
The rear seats are probably a little more upright than the 5, but it seems comfortable enough. The interior is good quality.
Options - we got a deal on a dealer stock one that my wife liked - the only option I would have liked in addition is heated seats, but SWMBO doesn't like them anyway.
LED lights are really good - park assist is OK, but I've used it twice, just to get some laughs from my 7 year old son..
We have 17's on ours and that seems to really help with the ride - they look OK too (they're simple 5 spoke ones).
Basic Nav is fine - pro obviously better, but for the use it gets with us works fine.

The wife bought one brand new Sep last year, on my (and Andrew Frankel in Motorsport) recommendation.
Petrol, Sport trim.
It's been back to dealer 6 (or 7) times in 13k miles: Discoloured ext trim; Boot & bonnet closing issues, software resets, passenger seat belt audible alarm despite no one sitting in it (in again for 3rd attempt at fix), rattly sunroof.
It couldn't be more of a lemon if it was painted yellow.
My wife hates it with a passion but the dealership would be quite willing to take it off her hands for 17k.
She was given a Gran as a 'courtesy' car but even that had an engine warning light on when it was driven home.
There is a formal letter going to BMW Head Office but what good that will do I don't know.
Just trying to determine if others are better screwed together than ours.

Depends on spec, BMW used 218i sports from 2015 are now around 18-19k, so depending on spec might be about right. £17k sounds a low offer?
The detailer pointed it out. It went back to the dealer and they sorted that (though not the cracked rear number plate where it had it been drilled - and still haven't).
220 Sport, leather, sunroof, basic nav + bluetooth, petrol, 13k miles, dark metallic blue.
The dealership's attitude/service and the experience with this car mean I'll never buy another BMW.
It's shoddy and unsatisfactory on a £7k Dacia let alone a £25k plus 'premium brand'.
I had a good nose round a 2GT when buying my 135. It looked pretty good/practical and having a ropey S-Max that will need replacing soon it seems viable. My concern was boot space, it looked noticeably smaller boot space wise than the S-Max.
The problem I have is that she wants a Disco next instead!

We recently got back from a holiday in Northumberland and 1200 miles over two weeks in the S-Max has put me right off it.
My concern in buying something nice is that the family will trash it from Monday to Friday!
Infotainment is much better in the 2 series than the S-Max.
Comfort is better, but I just did a 5+ hour drive in ours with a slightly sore back and it was worse after sitting in it than it would be in my 1 series with sport seats - lack of lumbar is the issue I guess.
I don't know what seating options there are, but this maybe worth checking - still better than the S-Max though in this regard

Lumbar support is an option extra. I don't find I miss it in the sports seats in ours, I've driven it 430 miles to Scotland in one go and didn't feel any real discomfort. We had it in Cornwall last week and did a fair whack of miles with no complaints (other than the fuel tanker driver who scraped it in a petrol station!).
One thing that is a real pain is how expensive the bike rack is to retrofit. Had I know I'd have searched for one with it - it's a car bought by families, most families will want to carry bikes! Such a cheap option new as well.

I'm looking to buy a Gran Tourer 218i used, automatic with low milage shown. I am advised by a mechanic friend, now retired a few years, that the engine may be a problem - boosters or something he said. Can anyone guide, advise on the quality of this car. Likely to cause problems? I have grandchildren with lots of journeys, short and long runs to make. Thanks.

The B38 engine is used in the 1 series and 3 series, as well as various Minis. It's a turbo three cylinder, and not the last word in refinement, but I thought it was a generally reliable engine? Happy to be told otherwise by those with more experience of this engine.The engine isn't bad, it's the rest of the car that can be a bit rubbish. Squeaks, rattles, water leaks and even rusty seat runners. Main dealer mechanics I know have a fairly low opinion of them. It's basically an expensive Zafira and certainly not the quality item BMW would have you believe.
